To all our U.S. (and expats) members...

Happy 4th of July!

I hope you are all doing well and being careful.
I'll be putting out our newsletter soon, but I wanted to drop by to wish you a Happy & Safe 4th!

If you are having any gatherings, please be careful.

By now many of you know the girl I'm dating is a respiratory therapist at a major hospital.
Trust me when I tell you that you do not want to get Covid 19.

I'd also like to thank those of you who have been kind enough to make "subscription" donations over the past week or so, very much appreciated.

Like many people things have been a bit tight for me.

Sales in my online store (PianoSupplies.com) have slowed to a crawl, I went many weeks with no tuning business,
and the Music Shop I built in my house (www.MapleStreetMusicShop.com) hasn't even officially opened yet because I've been hesitant (and I've had a couple of health issues slow me down a bit).

I just hope as the year goes on that our country can get back on track.

Take care and be well.

All the Best,

Frank Baxter

Happy 4th of July to you too, Frank!

It's hot and humid here in Georgia, and I wear an N95 mask if I go out in public. I'll be glad when things get back to some level of normality, and they develop a workable vaccine for the COVID-19 virus.

All the best!

Rick

Wishing all of my friends a Happy and Safe 4th of July! May God Bless America on her 244th Birthday and let us all reflect on the Vision that our Founding Fathers had for this country where “all men are created equal”, the great sacrifice that many of our fellow citizens fought and died for to defend that liberty over these many generations, and for the diverse contributions of so many bright and hopeful immigrants such as my parents, Alexander Hamilton and Sergei Rachmaninoff; each contributing to this great melting pot that make us “a more perfect Union“.

This is the first season in many years that I have not been able to put on the opening of the Oakland Municipal Band season on July 4. The band has been performing since 1912. This is the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Edoff Memorial Bandstand at Lakeside Park, the 150th anniversary of Lake Merritt being designated the first wildlife refuge in the United States. It is a time of regret for all of us.

We usually head out to watch fireworks on the 4th. Lots of places nearby have them. In spite of our proximity to the national mall, I’ve never gone down there on the 4th because big events tend to be a real hassle with crowds, access and security, etc.

When my dad got older, he used to watch “Capitol Fourth” every year on TV instead of going out. We’re not going out much these days either, so the girls and I streamed it online.

For me, the highlight was Patti Labelle singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I love that song, and although it’s not your usual patriotic piece, it really seemed apropos this year. Anyway, I’m not sure how old Patti Labelle is, but she’s still got pipes.

Another highlight, and very close runner up, was The Temptations doing a medley of all their hits. I love choral music and great harmony too, and really enjoy a lot of the oldies. Almost everyone was performing offsite, and many were obviously green-screened, given the ongoing pandemic. The Temptations performed in front of videos of themselves from years ago, at some points even doing the same dance steps as in the video behind them. It was pretty cool.
