Are there any DPs that can do this? (play through speakers and headphones at the same time, that is)

Explanation: I know it seems like a dumb question, but I do have a reason for asking. I currently play a rather ancient DP (our, also ancient, acoustic piano is beyond repair - at least beyond what could be achieved at home etc.) and use the phones all the time because sound is so much better, and I believe that's 'often' true with DPs. However, my wife misses hearing the sound of the piano and is actually quite happy with the speaker sound (she's often in another room so the sound is, well, somewhat modified). Tbh, with this one and the few DPs I've tried I hate playing through the speakers - so uninvolving compared to the old acoustic or using the headphones, OK in the short-term, but....

If there aren't any, I suspect that the only way of achieving this is putting the sound through some external device (not sure what, perhaps just a mixer) and using external speakers.

Any thoughts?

Oh, an additional thought - if the speakers and headphones combination isn't possible, DPs with the possibility to use line-out and headphones at the same time? (I have an old hi-fi power amp and speakers currently not in use)

Plugging in headphones does _not_ turn off Line Out jacks.

So hi-fi amp and speakers will work OK, if the DP has Line Out jacks.

Thank-you. That may be the best approach, I think. I have spent quite some time checking user manuals (on-line) - the ones I read say that using headphones turns of internal speakers but it wasn't clear to me from reading them that the combination of line-out plus 'phones was OK.

My Clav CLP240 has a three-way switch to control this.

In one position you get the expected behavior. It plays through speakers unless phones are plugged in. Plugging in phones silences the speakers.

In another position the speakers are silenced unconditionally, but phones will work if plugged in.

In the third position the speakers sound regardless of whether phones are plugged in.

The latter is the mode petebfrance is asking about. Do other pianos have this three-way? I don't know.

If yours does not then you can do as Charles suggests: run the line outputs to a speaker system.

My MP11SE seems to allow this automatically. I don't usually do that but I just checked and both function at the same time. My speakers are connected to the LINEOUTs on my piano.

Interesting Pete... you've jogged my memory RE a not so famous inventor: Andreas Pavel.

Believe it or not, he actually invented the Walkman! Big Corp tactics were used in order to pinch his patented idea... Once the market was moving towards music players with no moving parts (ie MP3), they settled the dispute with him for quite a few $$$$.

Anyway, at some point, he was working on a listening experience which involved specific open-back headphones and speakers at the same time... I had a listen, and is was very interesting.

Fancy having a go for us? 😁

Learning to play. Consciously incompetent, which apparently is a good starting point. smirk

Yes! Just what I need. I wonder, though, do any current models have this?
(My keyboard only has one headphone socket)

Oh - that's a bit frustrating. From looking at the manual for its replacement, the ES110, that feature appears to have been dropped! I compared the manuals, btw. - very similar, except....

Er…. perhaps not, but interesting all the same. They'd possibly be less irritating than sitting next to somebody with headphones that just sound tinny, but....

Not sure how it is with other makes/models, but my Casio PX-870 will allow me to listen to the studio monitors and headphones simultaneously... well, if I wanted to, that is. (my piano has two headphone jacks... one for the headphones and one for the external speakers)

I can also listen to my studio monitors and the piano's four onboard speakers simultaneously. (which I do all the time, as it sounds very nice this way!)

Sounds good? Well ... it also looks very good. Are you a self-maintaining neatnik? Or is there a wife who rages until you clean your mess? (I'm in the latter category.)
