Wondered if people had any advice, my newly restored (from proper experts) grand piano with all new parts has started making a weird sound on the A note, two below middle C. Its not a tuning thing as its been tuned 5 times in 5 months (i record on it). The note lets out a high pitch (possibly something in the harmonics, whistling sound, which might be the sound of the note 4 octaves up. Its only on this note. It was happening to a higher E a few days ago but that seems to of mysteriously stopped. Ive checked everything is tight and moved stuff in room in case it was reacting against that. The note does not let out a clear frequency which cant be normal.

I would really appreciate advice on this, also the tuner is great so its not to do with that.

Longitudinal mode frequency likely. Your description of it is textbook accurate. Is it on one string of the bichord only, or both, or only when played together?

Solution is problematic and may require redesign of the string(s) for that unison. Occasionally things like that can be caused (changed) by strike point, hammer travel, hammer/string mating, even slightly loose balance rail hole in the key. It is a very complicated subject (assuming of course that this is the problem). Some claim they can voice it out. I have never been successful with that.

James Arledge has a good video on his website dealing with the subject.

P.S.

As an afterthought, you might try muting off all the "non-speaking" lengths of all notes above the bass. If the problem goes away then it is simply a sympathetic resonance and can be tracked down. If it does not go away, then you're back to square one.

I will be surprised if that fixes it. Be prepared for the possibility of never getting it out if your head. It usually is not an easy fix.
