All the pianos we tried were already open so it’s not the boxed in sound which I’m comfortable distinguishing. The “old piano sound” is probably due to the combination of all the aged parts and different materials used depending on the timeframe they were built. All together we’ve played c3x/c3 from 2019, 1995, 1982, 1979, and 1970, (sound like ocd!) they sounded like the body and luster were gradually fading as we moved from new to old.

As for the fallboard, I meant to take a peek inside and probably pull an action. I can do it myself but I’d rather not take chances of scratching the case work or worse!

Oh, I used to play a grand with only the fry lid open so that’s what I’m going to do again. After seeing so many grand pianos with rusty or tarnished strings in comparison to a lot older uprights with strings in a whole lot better conditions, I think keeping the lid closed makes a huge difference. Maybe a cover also to keep it safe and cozy, but no lace doily for me!

Good to hear that.

Yes, I think it's good to only check the inside if you that particular piano passes all other tests. And never pull the action yourself, these are very expensive, fragile and heavy parts.

The primary thing you'll see is that every computerized piano accompany a full arrangement of 88 completely weighted, hammer-activity keys.
pianos are straightforward instruments designed as an alternative to their acoustic counterparts. These are the Piano shopping tips.
