Welcome to the piano bar. We're a bit tardy but better late than never!

My offering this month is Cottontail, by Duke Ellington. This is sometimes considered to be a transition piece, not quite a bebop tune, not quite a swing-era tune either. It is based on the rhythm changes form. Duke played it in Bb, but for some reason that I have not been able to determine, most of the fake books have it in Ab. I am playing here from a lead sheet, along with a backing track.

My neighbours just got 3 rabbits for their kids, haha. What a nice and happy tune you are playing! I like those chords played with both hands from 2:35 to 2:47.

Here is my latest rendition of Gershwin's original piano arrangement of "The Man I Love". I am never satisfied with my recordings and keep revisiting the pieces I have recorded... A kind pianist posted my recording on her Soundcloud channel as part of her lockdown solace project.

The Man I Love from Gershwin's Songbook

Constantin,

It's time to stop working on this song; your playing and recording efforts were perfect!

This has always been my favorite Gershwin song. That descending bassline/chord sequence under the repeating motif in the melody is uniquely poignant, to me.

After Amy H, introduced me to Alexis Ffrench at the last ABF recital, I decided to have a go at Bluebird myself.

That is wonderful Constantin. Such a deep rich sound that sounds so right for The Man I Love.

Ed, What a proper upbeat feel to that. It makes me think it must be fun to play, but I'm guessing you make it sound a lot easier than it really is.

Kevin,

Well done, a good listen.

This is a lovely song, which I remember from the recital.

Hey Kevin, really enjoyed listening to this. Great job! Are you using a VST or the internal Kawai sounds?

I'm using the Vienna Imperial VST from VSL. An old one but my current favourite VST.

Hello old friends! I was here awhile back. I am a guitar player and took up piano much later. Studying classical piano again using Damon Ferrante. I don pretty good improving. Here is a piece with quite bit of piano in it. (also mandolin that I just started playing six months ago) https://soundcloud.com/user-217432923/i-cant-help-it

And here is the first classic I learned from the Ferrante book.

Nicole, I remember my mother playing the mandolin in ancient times. but it is an instrument we rarely hear these days! Your mix all sounded good. Simple Gifts is something I associate with Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, which I love. That's a neat arrangement. I like the cross-hand thing.

KevinM – Bluebird (Alexis Ffrench) This is beautiful new classics and minimal music. I did not notice an unintended additional measure since this piece is completely new to me. Well, I do know that e.g. Yiruma usually deviates from the written score when he is playing his compositions live on stage, and he frequently adds bars and repetitions.

NicoleCA – I can’t help it Hello there, country girl! I really do like this recording. Are you playing all the instruments yourself? Which DAW have you used to produce this?

NicoleCA – Simple Gifts Trad. Good – you do manage to play the melody in the left hand from 0:30 onwards quite well. Really good for a beginner.

Here is a happy song I worked on 2 weeks ago. Despite all the lockdowns many countries are opening up. We're not going back to normal for a while but I still find reasons to celebrate every day.
