Hello,
I've been having a dull, throbbing pain at the base of my RH 4th finger, on the side closest to the 3rd finger. Nothing visible from the outside, it feels as if it's inside the knuckle. It occurs randomly both at and away from the piano. It started a month or two ago, at a time that I was playing around with a clementi sonata in F# minor op 25 no.5 (lots of rapid double thirds) - which was of course far above my current level. Oops.
I'm now back to playing pieces around my level, and more importantly I've started working with a very experienced teacher. I haven't yet brought up the mild pain that I've been having, but I am noticing that this week it is getting a bit worse now that I have been practicing more. We did discuss involving the arm in playing more, and that my hands are perhaps a little bit too flat in fast passages, with alot of energy being used to lift fingers up higher than necessary.
I'm going to mention the troublesome finger at my next lesson but I was just wondering if anyone has had any similar pain/discomfort at the base of a finger? Could this be the start of arthritis etc? I am slightly sad to finally have started working with a teacher, and now I possibly must give it a break for a while.

When you move as efficiently as possible, you can minimise overworking your hands, arms, back etc. It's good that your teacher is identifying areas in your technique where you can improve.

I would definitely go and see a physiotherapist. They'll work out what is wrong quick smart and tell you what remedial action to take. If you're experiencing pain then don't exacerbate it.

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience. Kawai K8 & Kawai Novus NV10 13x

My question is this: before you started to learn Clementi's Sonata , did you have to work on etudes №№ 15 and 26 from the compilation of Czerny-Germer?

I didn't work on any Czerny etudes in preparation for the Clementi Sonata, I was looking at this piece without a teacher. I did however find a Brahms Exercise (no 24?) which I thought would help - it involved holding notes whilst playing with the other fingers.
Thanks, I'll get in touch with a physiotherapist. I've made a doctor's appointment for now but I'm assuming I will just be told to rest it.

Sometimes if you have troubled fingers, you get a small lump (nodule) on the palm. Could be cushioning fluid leaking out of the joint and would indicate some arthritic onset. I've had it for years; some days it's fine, others not so. But I've had to tailor my playing in the light of this. It's no trouble really, I simplify if it helps. Hope it's better for you; may well be only a temporary thing. What is your instrument?

There are ligaments on the left and right sides of a knuckle joint, the inner one can be easily hurt when stretching strenously. It's much more likely that you have a minor trauma of that ligament than the arthritis. But still it's a good idea to visit a doctor.

I wouldn't do these hold note exercises if experiencing pain, they're kinda taxing. Hope you get better, cheers!

Yes you're probably right KlinkKlonk, my 4th finger definitely agrees! It seemingly takes no orders. I did try to ensure I was playing it slowly and without tension but alas, perhaps I cannot be my own judge of where / if tension is occurring!
Thanks Iaroslav, i do hope it's just a minor injury which will recover with time. I think it may be an issue with the connection between the 3rd and the 4th finger. I have also had issues going from a 3rd finger on a white key to a 4th finger on a black key (B and Bb minor scales for instance). I understand the two fingers are somewhat dependent on eachother, but I really cannot lift the 4th finger more than a few mm above the 3rd without alot of tension.
Sorry to hear about the condition peterws, but it is good that you're able to still play! I actually cannot see any issue from the outside. I'm currently playing on a Yamaha p515, and as far as I'm aware, it leans towards being a heavy action.

Mine too is the 515. I find it a loose and decent action for piano. But when I can, I'll try out some acoustics. In the past, I'd noticed no difference and wouldn't expect an improvement; but some claim otherwise.
