Hi,

recently I bought a Roland FP-10 that I use primary as a MIDI Controller I like almost everything except one thing. The gaps between keys are not even. Specially between E and F, B and C. The gap between E4 and F4 is the worst. It does not bother most people and it is primary optical destruction but it makes me not want to play the piano. I guess I am too picky. I ve tried to get over it but my brain wont let me frown. The best piano is the one you want to play and I just don't want to play this thing. I know it is weird but I can not get over it. Does anybody know what digital pianos/MIDI Controllers with weighted key under 550€ does not have this problem? I am willing to sacrifice some action to have an optically pleasant keyboard.

Does anybody have experience with Kord D1, Casio PX-S1000, Yamaha P45, Studiologic SL88 Studio? Or maybe something else?

My FP-30 has very even spaces. It's really strange, because the FP-10 supposedly has the same action, but this and some other posts make me wonder about that. Perhaps it's technically the same, but the quality control ain't so good ... Anyway, if you're willing to spend a little more, that might be an option.

Do note that this could vary from instrument to instrument, not just make & model, so as always, if you can try one out in person first, that might save you some grief.

A picture would be helpful to determine how picky you are. smile

I am very picky about some details but the unevenness on both my DPs (ES8 and RD2000) never bothered me. I mean, the gap differences along the keyboard in both are not significant enough to trigger my OCD. Maybe you have a deffective FP-10 where some keys are not the right width.

I've had two of the same model (twice), and each time one was absolutely perfect, and the other not quite so (but within 'manufacturing tolerances').

I guess it depends on who was assembling it on the day!

PS EVC2017, it's not OCD... it's CDO in alphabetical order. 😜

Learning to play. Consciously incompetent, which apparently is a good starting point. smirk

So this is the biggest gap.

I have seen other FP-10 on videos and pictures. I think they have same gaps frown

I'll post some pix of my FP-30 a little later, see if it's more to your liking.

The distance between the E4 and F4 keys is about 1,7 mm (0,0669291 inch). The neighbor B and C are about 0,9mm (0.0354331 inch) apart.

Based on your photo it does look like the gap is a little bigger, but I'm wondering it may also be due to the angle.

I checked my FP-10 and they look almost perfectly even to my eye. However when I took a photo from very close and directly above the gap, that particular gap looks larger than others. And this is the case for all gaps.

But anyways I guess the bottom line is if you're not happy about it ask for an exchange or even a refund if you can still do so.

I'll also try to find a place to upload my pic as well.

Showing the middle 2 octaves of my FP-10. Not sure if it's an accurate reflection due to angle and light, but I did find them quite even even upon close inspection.

You are absolutely right about the angle but I have measured it as well. The gap is little bigger and I am being picky. Unfortunately I can not send it back frown
I think yours looks better.

FWIW there are slightly wider gaps between most B and C and E and F keys on both my DPs. I agree with JerryY regarding asking for replacement or reimbursement, if that is possible.

OK, pix of my FP-30. Not perfect, but pretty damn good, as good as any I've seen.

Flip the switch, choose to not mind the gaps, if the keys don't rub on eachother while playing or whatever, there is no problem.

Realize that you are in control, and make a conscious choice to not mind the gaps. Don't allow yourself to struggle with something so unimportant, it's a waste of time and energy.

If it causes any friction resistance then it's a problem and should be replaced. If it doesn't then it's not important.

It's easy to get your thumbnail catching on the gap whether it's pronounced or not. At least I know when to cut 'em . . . .

Just be happy that your piano gaps aren't as wide as those on the London tubes.
I was there once, and one station had a gap wide enough for fall into.

I wonder if they tried to save a metal plate somewhere so that the FP10 isn't as rigid.

OR.. If this piano is on a very new Run on their molds, their early/introductory set of molds may have imperfections. They won't replace it because these molds are extremely expensive, but after they exhaust the sets, they'd make a new one with the corrections. This is also why products made later in the cycle are usually better. (not always, cost cuts, could get worse)

This isn't a big deal for a DP though, because the mechanism doesn't need extreme precision, the outcome is merely an aesthetic deduction.

Either way, HAS ANYONE seen a tear down video of the FP10, I'd like to see if they're really giving everyone the same keybeds, or if they've cut corners somewhere.

It's also possible that during assembly, they slightly offset the rails, by mistake or intentionally to match the pcb. You can take it apart and see if it has any wiggle room to move it over.

It would bother me too.

"Everything can be fixed." Whether or not you want to take it apart and figure out how to fix it is another story.
