Does anyone know where I can source some ivory key tops to replace missing ones on a grand piano I’m working on?

You will of course hear from people who say you should switch to plastic keytops, that ivory isn’t actually better and pianists who prefer it don’t know any better, or that it is unethical to use ivory keys made from the tusks of an elephant which died many decades ago, but I can understand your desire smile

There are restrictions on ivory and the last I read they are very strict. I’m guessing it’s to restrict those who will use deceptive means to obtain illegal ivory, but it does affect the piano industry perhaps unnecessarily. You’d probably need to find a source somewhat locally and ask that they be given to you for free. I had received a number of ivory keytops a while back from someone who had salvaged a lot from old pianos. They only charged shipping.

I think it depends on how many you want.
Here in UK there are plenty of old keytops around. I have a good few in a bag for replacing odd ones and twos in clients' pianos. I don't charge for them though.

I believe the real issue is transporting them over state lines...not necessarily the "sale" of them. I could be wrong and will appreciate correction if needed. If I am repairing/replacing ivories on a piano in my state of NH, I think I'm safe and can charge as needed. If I am doing it for someone in Massachusetts or Maine (where the piano resides) I "could" have a problem. Do I get worried about it? Only my hairdresser knows for sure.
