So, I found this video of Libertango for piano and violin, the pianist is Jacob Koller, whose videos I've started to popping up a lot lately. I love the arrangement and the video (well except for the weird situation with the violinist's bow).

But, to my question: What kind of piano is this upright here? I'm thinking of the uprights I've known and I don't think any of them had this kind of panel in the front, it was either on or off. Also, why wouldn't he take off the front panel completely?

Oh my! The pianist from the video above, Jacob Koller, recorded one of my all time favorite pieces (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, by Japanese composer/pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto) -- in Japan, outside and it started to rain! The poor piano (Yamaha C3). In the comments, he said it survived, but still!

I was tuning a CFIIIs for an outdoor concert and it began to rain, unusual for that time of year in San Francisco. I had the movers leave me some extra moving blankets to keep the piano dry, lifted the lid, unfolded the fly leaf (the flap at the front of the lid), and covered the piano and myself, to keep the piano reasonably dry. What worked out well was that the blankets kept the external noise out as well, so after that, when I would tune for outdoor concerts, I would get the extra blankets, and it made life much easier. The weather cleared up by the time the concert actually began.

And I think the piano in the original question might be something like a Cable Nelson studio, but I do not think it is exactly that model. The board in front is the fall board folded back against the hammer rail. The front board is entirely removed.

That video does not play on my computer, but I was able to find the video on YouTube.

BDB, thanks for the explanation!

DreamPiano80 and Retsacnal, glad you liked the second video, it's lovely isn't it.

That rain really bugs me though! It's hard to believe the piano was ok, you look at it and think it must be some kind of special effects, that it's not really outside in the rain. But the pianist commented about it and indeed, it was really outside and it was really raining!
