Wouldn’t it be nice to get a decent piano book

Hi all, just a quick question. Am after a Beach Boys piano book with decent transcriptions of the songs, as many as posisble in one book ideally. Am asking for advice as I understand some such books are fairly inaccurate and miss out the intros, are often in a different key etc. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks 😃

Their music is vocal guitar/bass/drum based, not really piano style music. So it will always be some arrangers concept of the tunes. So you are best off beating out the chords and singing it like Brian would do himself. The only tune I play solo piano of theirs is "God Only Knows". As a jazz pianist, I play it from my custom 1 page lead sheet that simply shows the melody and chord symbols. (can send you) I play about a dozen Beatles tunes, their composition seem to me to translate better to piano, I can't imagine doing Beach Boys tunes on piano because the instrumentation and voices were so important for their happy songs. It might sound corny as solo piano in my hands.

Hi

I don't think any commercially available songbooks will be that accurate.

However if you go to Elmo Peelers website you'll find authentic transcriptions of 5 Beach Boys songs. Elmo Peeler toured with the Beach Boys, as well as Rod Stewart and few other well known artists.

I purchased the "God Only Knows" transcription last year, which is very good IMO.

Here's a link: https://www.manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm

He also has transcriptions of many famous Piano parts and solos from lots of great Pianists, mainly in the Rock/Pop idiom. It'll work out more expensive than a songbook, but the transcriptions are very good.

Cheers

You realize that a note for note keyboard part transcribed from the recording does not play the vocal melody or the bass part or the guitar parts or the drum part. The keyboard part is strictly a background part and when taken out of context has little relation to the sum of the parts.

Hi all thanks for your help. Sorry I should have been more specific. I would be quite happy with a ‘composite’ version of the BB’s songs (as in the vocal being incorporated), arranged for solo piano. I just wanted all the intros including (such as California Girls as an example) and the arrangement not just diving in at the first verse. Thanks very much for the links and advice, will take a look at those 👍 I appreciated the beach boys don’t particularly lend themselves as well to piano as , say the beatles do, but i just love their peerless melodies
