Didn't he start at 8 a.m. Berlin time? 20 hours takes him to 4 a.m.; I think the end is near. That stack of sheet music to the right side of the music desk has been diminishing by the hour; oh it is ALL moved now. Most of it is on the floor now and he has just stepped away for what may be his last break.

According to the YouTube link, he's been playing for 14 hours now.

Thanks for the correction; I had misread the Gilmore website and thought he started at 8 am Berlin time.
Gilmore Levit Vexations says: "On Saturday, May 30, at 8:00 AM (ET), he will live stream from b-sharp studios in Berlin one of music history’s longest compositions: Erik Satie’s Vexations, which lasts approximately 20 hours."

No, you were correct. He ended playing at 15 hours. The last variations were excruciating, played softly and much slower. An exhausted Igor closed the piano lid and held his head in his hands afterwards. What a journey he has taken.

I came back in time for the end, just as the last sheet of paper came off the music desk. Wow. Ultramarathon. His Twitter feed says in German and English, "Done. Done. Happy. Fulfilled. Grateful. And so damn high.... Thank you...all of you. So so much!"

Nice followup interview with Igor Levit in the New York Times.
What comes after something like “Vexations”?
I honestly don’t know. This morning, my friends came over for coffee and I opened my iPad and Googled “the longest piano pieces ever.” And 90 percent of what comes out is Sorabji. Then Frederic Rzewski’s “The Road,” which is an incredible cycle. He once told me it’s like “War and Peace” music.
So you’re not going to just take a break.
Are you kidding? Of course not.

Yes, quick follow up on what the writer called "an extraordinary act of musical self-flagellation". Glad Igor did not have any extreme side effects afterwards, either physical or emotional. The ending was quite moving as the last sheet of paper was removed from the music stand. And the thoughts of pandemic and his knowledge of the crisis happening in the United States during his playing make this performance art even more poignant.

One expects nothing less from Igor Levit, a concert pianist with a social conscience. And auction proceeds from the sale of those 840 sheets of music will help assist other musicians.

What if Satie had decided on 1,680 repetitions instead of 840? Would that have been attempted, or understood as a joke and left alone?
(edit: or if he had specified “only” 420 repetitions, would Vexations be performed more often?)

Wonder what the auction price per sheet would be. Someone on Levit’s twitter page had suggested €100. Interesting to see how fast they go, for how much.

Another marathon awaits IL to sign and authenticate the 840 sheets. I would buy one, it's a nice thought for all the musicians who don't have his exposure and visibility.
