This Saturday, May 30th, Igor Levit will livestream Eric Satie's monumental "Vexations", a set of 840 variations lasting approximately 20 hours. Live from Berlin, will take place 8 am Berlin time. As part of his Gilmore 2018 prize award, he is financing this in an effort to reach a large geographic set of listeners across various time zones.
Igor writes:

“It has always been a strong wish of mine to be able to perform Erik Satie’s Vexations. While written in the 19th century, this piece was revolutionary thanks to its atonal harmony. The few notes – a theme and two variations – fit on just one sheet. The 840 repetitions though herald early on a future of aesthetic repetitiveness. The sheer duration of over 20 hours of Vexations doesn’t feel like a ‘nuisance’ or ‘torture’ to me, as the title would suggest, but rather a retreat of silence and humility. It reflects a feeling of resistance.

“That’s why it feels right to play the Vexations right now. My world and that of my colleagues has been a different one for many weeks now and will probably remain so for a long time. Vexations represent for me a silent scream".

The program will feature on the Gilmore website: https://www.thegilmore.org/streaming/igor-levit-vexations/

Of course one doesn't have to stay for the entire marathon, but pop in every once in a while. A draconian effort, I don't know if other pianists will be involved. Even John Cage, who debuted the work in 1963, used a tag team of 11 pianists dubbed "The Longest Piano Piece in History". My guess is that Levit will go solo, which has been done in previous efforts since Cage's debut. The New Yorker called it "A Dangerous and Evil Piano Piece" as some players towards the end experience agitation, delirium, hallucinations. And some an out of body experience. Levit is up to the challenge, let's hope he navigates this marathon safely!

While I love Satie, that is a long time to listen to him.

Thanks for posting.

If you ever need solid proof that the COVID-19 lockdown is making people do unspeakable things, this would be it.

It has begun. Levit has food and snacks by his side, along with a huge stack of paper, each variation gets tossed to the ground after being played. Bathroom breaks?

Yes definitely bathroom breaks allowed!

This will get interesting around 3-4am on his body clock time. Watching as I type.

I have to say that if you use it as a hypnotic for these stressful times, Max Richter's Sleep (which is eight hours of continuous tonal stuff composed for the purpose) is much better, but what do I know, I'm no insomniac........

Levit likes experimenting as a pianist, I wouldn't be surprised if he have had a catheter inserted with a discreet leg-bag and kept playing non-stop. smile

It is strangely hypnotically soothing as background music while doing things around the house. Levit does take bathroom breaks, so no catheters. He is still being very musical with what is a very static theme. Varying his tone production, dynamics, while maintaining a strict tempo. Can't imagine what is running through his head after 10 hours.

I tuned in at the "intermission" just before your clip (with the bottle); it is hypnotic. I am reluctant to to turn away from it.

Alex Ross quotes Igor Levit in the New Yorker, “I honestly don’t really know what is going to happen. But I believe I will feel, while doing it, kind of similar to what I go through now. There will be ups, there will be downs, there will be devastation, there will joy, there will be literal pain. Just this monotonic repetition of just the same thing, of a piece which in a way has no apparent musical content—just this staring at a wall, waiting, waiting. At some point, you lose the perspective of time—like now. You lose the perspective of an end—like now. I think at some point I will lose the hope that this will ever end—like now. Maybe I won’t make it. It’s just about surviving. Like now.”

I would be interested to hear how he feels tomorrow or the next day, when he next plays Mozart or Beethoven or ... Will it be like coming back to life?

I've seen him slumped with his elbows lower than Glenn Gould. I've even seen him play standing up. And drinking...

It's oddly fascinating.

The camera angles, close ups, long shots, keyboard shots make it all interesting and creative. This is a marathon for the cameraman and the tech crew as well.

His playing is softer now; so thoughtful. The experience is far more moving than I expected. His stamina, his focus is extraordinary.

I wish he could change to a different bench or chair from time to time. I guess I am feeling protective: as if it could make any difference to him whether I am watching/listening or not!

What a feat of endurance this is - both physically and mentally. You have to wonder what thoughts and impulses are passing through his brain, having to play the same series of notes over and over again. Must be so tempting to break out into something completely different, even if just for a few seconds. He's over halfway now, so hopefully it'll start to get easier for him psychologically. Or maybe not - I'm looking forward to seeing what he has to say about the whole experience.
