So, in lieu of going safe and digital, I took a 6-month lease on an acoustic Yamaha b2. Delivered this afternoon, it is now out in the guest house/barn.

Tone is good, and by skewing the back a few inches from the wall (more out on the right side just a bit), I was able to make one or two more notes in the bass speak cleanly. Not that I'll ever use them, but it is always nice to get the full set of overtones.

Two small things. One, the keyboard is defective. I tried a few scales and found that all the keys were in the wrong place. Second, it will need tuning. There are a few single notes that are a bit sour, and 5ths/octaves don't appear to be uniformly spaced. Any idea on how long to let it settle before calling someone in?

What does that mean: " ... all the keys were in the wrong place...?"

"Uniformly spaced"? You mean...?

Depending on how much of a change from one environment to another; no fewer than two weeks and maybe as many as four weeks.

Since this is a rental, presumably the dealer from whom you rented it is responsible for fixing the "small things" (which don't seem small to me) and should certainly offer one tuning once the piano settles in.

Regards,

Fifths don't sound identical up and down the keyboard, although there are no egregious mistunings. We shall survive 2 weeks.
