It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
Were you underwhelmed by the online demo tracks like I am, or did you like how they sounded? (i'm just trying to build a reference point for myself for comparison).
I've just listened to the demos and I like them. It actually sounds a little wilder than it does when I'm playing it. I need to spend more time with it.
Sorry I'm not making this any easier!
Given that you like Vienna Imperial so much, maybe the best thing is to keep it? It has amazing character.
This is useful for me. Since I didn't like the demos that much and you did, and I like the Concert D demos. Unless someone does some recordings in the next couple of days that create a sound I like, I think on Friday afternoon I'll get Concert D. I did see a mention that the BI introductory price will remain until the end of June so if I something changes and I decide BI is a must have before then I have time, and plenty of time to give Concert D a proper test drive before buying BI. Then I'll be a 3 VSL VST household.
Not sure why my post disappeared but here we go again. Why are all VSL demos sounding as though we're listening to the piano from a kilometer? I'd rather prefer close-miked perspectives in piano demos.

Yes, agreed, just commented on that in the other thread, but luckily there are closer mics included, (in the standard version also), just these demo's always sound so far away. I think it also makes the different piano's kinda sound the same, because their recorded in the same hall.
These demo's are not the demo's that make me want to hit the buy button.

Maybe VSL believes that most of their prospective sales are to people who don't want a "player perspective" but a "listener perspective".

The close mics sound very good. That's all I use mostly.

agree. I've never been very satisfied with their official demos. The performance uploaded by VSL users on YouTube or SoundCloud sounds better VSL need to improve their future official demos more diversely than they are now.
I've got it up and running. I wasn't able to get it going yesterday as the installation kept hanging. It turns out that it can't be installed initially on an exFAT drive (compatible with Mac and Win).
When I tried on Windows (after a long day of trying with a Mac) I got an error message telling me what the problem was. After it is installed, it can be copied to an exFAT drive and it works perfectly well (although VSL have said the native disk formats are easier on the computer). It's no big deal, but worth mentioning in case anyone runs into the same problem.
Anyway....
I've played it and it's really REALLY good.
It's very different from Vienna Imperial. It's very well behaved compared to its raucous older brother, and not a replacement. It's beautifully executed.
Initially I thought it was much more demanding than the Synchron Steinway, but after a while my underspecified system settled down.
Can you compare and contrast it with 274D? Are they both equally good but just different? Also, are you playing through headphones or external monitors?
^ Hmm, this is very odd, sounds like Pianoteq. With a hand on my heart I'd admit that if I heard that demo without knowing what it is, I would have sworn it was Pianoteq

^ That was my reaction, but I wanted to stay out of Pianoteq v sampling discussion, so I kept quiet.

Above demo of BI is very interested, and completely different with D274 in my experience. Dnt know his setting, but it does sound a little different from other synchron piano. Of course, it suits my taste.

It's hard to compare. I'd say they're both equally good, just different. I particularly like the bass and tenor of the Imperial. The responsiveness is great.

One can hear brief demos of the each individual mic on this page (please select the drop-down labeled "Details of Microphone Settings")
I guess the main VSL audience is those who does orchestra mixes. The main idea behind Synchron was to make their life easier IMO. And this is why we now have 3 concert grands recorded in all 3 different positions on the stage. We can assume this is the reason their demo video are for listener position. And we can also assume that there will be no more big concert grands from VSL for a while. However, there are also audio clips for every preset and every mic on their web site.
