Even your standard library is too much for me. Thanks for your consideration!
VSL should take you as an external beta tester; that would be a good pipeline from the classical piano playing community.

So do you get some close miics with the standard version?

Most vsl demo's don't make me want to buy them because they sound like i'm standing in the back of a hall listening to a piano being played far away.

I think it’s the same as with the D-274... you want to have that ribbon mic to get the real “solo pianist” sound. It’s only included in the full version.

Hmm, that's disappointing. But, good thing you can return the libraries if you don't like them, this way I can at least try them to see if the standard version is satisfying.

I will never buy one of the full versions, way too expensive, but a standard version is reasonably priced in a sale.

I just checked the vsl website, and it seems you do get a "close" and a "mid" mic with the standard version, are these not satisfying for a close sound?

Only condensers (hammer mics) are included with Standard library. You need Full lib for ribbon mic (player position). Same for D-274 and CFX.

Ah.. silly me. Thanks! These mics seem to sound close, so the standard versions don't seem like a no-go to me just because there is no ribbon mic.

Bought the standard version...downloading as we speak. With pain in my heart i removed the Garritan CFX full. I didn't enjoy it as much as in the first years ..even with such a big library 'sample fatigue' finally struck me. I mostly use the Embertone Walker 1955 but this one also sounds very promissing. The 10+ piano libraries i never use..a waste of money. Therefor i have a 500 GB SSD for piano's only..want a new one ? delete an older one, otherwise i would never learn to be more carefull. PS Bosendorfer is my favorite brand...this was a no brainer and i allready had their upright which was very nice indeed.

Ah, that is very interesting to me Pianistje, since the walker is my go-to piano as well, and I also feel the same about garritan cfx, so you seem to have about the same experiences as I do with these libraries.

please do share your experience with this new one!

Do you own vsl's d-274 as well, or their cfx?

Can’t wait to hear your impression of the new library!

I've got it up and running. I wasn't able to get it going yesterday as the installation kept hanging. It turns out that it can't be installed initially on an exFAT drive (compatible with Mac and Win).

When I tried on Windows (after a long day of trying with a Mac) I got an error message telling me what the problem was. After it is installed, it can be copied to an exFAT drive and it works perfectly well (although VSL have said the native disk formats are easier on the computer). It's no big deal, but worth mentioning in case anyone runs into the same problem.

Anyway....

I've played it and it's really REALLY good.

It's very different from Vienna Imperial. It's very well behaved compared to its raucous older brother, and not a replacement. It's beautifully executed.

Initially I thought it was much more demanding than the Synchron Steinway, but after a while my underspecified system settled down.

BTW my piano computer is an old Windows laptop, and my main computer is a more recent MacBook Pro.

I just got done playing the new Bösendorfer Imperial for 4 hours. Wow! I'm impressed. I'll share more tomorrow. I have to get some sleep.

God Bless,
David

I wonder if the old Bösendorfer Imperial (for the Vienna Instruments player) is gone. I suppose it could be a bit confusing having two pianos with the same name (and three Imperials).

Thanks John. Were you underwhelmed by the online demo tracks like I am, or did you like how they sounded? (i'm just trying to build a reference point for myself for comparison).

I was almost kind of hoping you said you didn't like it, confirming my impression from the demo tracks and then my mind would be made up to go for Concert D. But now I'm back in quandary land.

It is interesting that you see it as a completely different VST compared to VI. That it isn't just a replacement for VI.

Yes, it's very different. I haven't listened to the demos yet. I've been waiting for this piano to arrive for the last two years, and had a €100 voucher I was saving for it, so I just ordered it. 😁

I'd love if they sampled an Bösendorfer 225 in the small studio.

My life would be complete.

Of course two days ago my life would have been complete with a Synchron Vienna Imperial. 😁

I've just listened to the demos and I like them. It actually sounds a little wilder than it does when I'm playing it. I need to spend more time with it.

Sorry I'm not making this any easier!

Given that you like Vienna Imperial so much, maybe the best thing is to keep it? It has amazing character.
