I’ve never seen one of these before. Seller is selling it as a Baldwin because it says Baldwin on the fallboard but it’s a Hamilton model, (says Product Of Baldwin on the plate and Hamilton on the soundboard so I’m assuming it originally said Hamilton on the fallboard as well).

Anyone seen one of these before? How would one of these sound? BTW, I’m not considering buying it or anything, we’re very happy with our Baldwin M, just came across this on eBay and thought I’d ask since it’s so odd looking.

I have a customer with one. I've tuned it for a number of years now. It's a pretty little piano, but it's very limited tonally.

I was built in 1957 too, and I'm quite limited tonally also.

Yikes! There's no way it can be worth what they're asking for it, can it?

That’s what I was thinking. Even if it was a Baldwin Grand, and not a Hamilton with Baldwin on the fallboard, it wouldnt be worth 16k, would it? I paid $2500 for our 1962 Baldwin M about a month ago. I could buy 5 more and still be spending less than what this guy is asking.

I was thinking that if this piano is "vintage" that makes me vintage too...

I can say that the 1958 redesign wasn't all that great either.

The idea wasn't new with Baldwin. Chickering also made Symetrigrand. -- as they called it. The one I did some work on didn't seem to be noticeably worse scale-wise than their regular grands of the same size.

I think whoever is asking 16K for it is either smoking something they shouldn't or knows people that I don't....

Concerning the meaning of eBay prices:
One evening I saw three Chickering square grands for sale on eBay.
1) "Rare, Famous Antique Piano - $55,000"
2) "Real Chickering Piano, still plays - $500"
3) "Old piano, haul it away for free."

I don't know if you saw in the auction, the price includes "rebuild and restring". Depending what they consider a "rebuild", I think the price may not be inappropriate. Trying to justify putting that much money and effort into a small Hamilton is another thing. smile

I would also not be surprised if the piano is from 1947 rather than 1957. A serial number interpreted to be a Baldwin from '57, is actually ten years older when checked in Hamilton age listings. The rounded side arms and music rest look quite art deco for as late as 1957.

I’ve heard that this one is well suited to playing Chopin’s Butterfly Etude:

I rebuilt one of these things. It was made as a "student" instrument.
Can't imagine who'd want to pay $20K for one...
