I just purchased the Garritan CFX Full and am trying to use it with my Yamaha P-515 and it’s native speakers. I’m running the VST on a new Mac Mini.

I don’t hear any difference while using it, suggesting that I don’t have it set up correctly. I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to things like this so I’m sure it’s an error on my part somewhere.

Also when I switch to the Bosendorfer sample on the P-515 while running the VST that is definitely what I hear (Bosendorfer) not a CFX (either native or Garritan).

When I open the Preferences box of Garritan it lists Digital Piano Yamaha and CFX Concert Grand as the MIDI device options (which at least shows the program recognizes what it is connected to). For audio device the options listed are Digital Piano, DisplayPort, and Mac mini speakers. I’ve tried the various combinations.

I have the P-515 connected to the Mac via the USB to host port on the back.

Any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You need to turn “local control” off in the MIDI settings of the piano so that you won’t hear its internal sound.

I turned off “local control” in the MIDI settings. Now when I press the keys there is no sound. Looks like I’m still not doing something correctly.

But I do get sound from the P-515’s speakers when I use my mouse to click on the tiny keyboard on the bottom of the Garritan screen. Now I just need to get the sound when pressing the real keys.

Garritan CFX is not using your piano as a MIDI input. You need to select it. If you turned on the piano after you started Garritan, restart it for it to be able to detect the MIDI input.

I'm hijacking this old thread. smile

I don't have much knowledge on velocity curves so i wonder if anyone knows how i should set up my velocity curve in CFX Full with my P-515? I know certain pianos don't reach the full value but i don't know how the P-515 performes.

You could install the pianoteq demo, and in the midi tab under the options you will see which values your dp reaches when you play it.

As for velocity curves.. I'm affraid that's mostly just trying, and see what works best for you. I do think they are quite important, as it can make a big difference.

There is a thread on velocity curves for Garritan CFX; based on that sample and other posts here I would guess most use the "default" velocity curve in the "advanced" tab. Search for the thread for more details.

Thank you!

I think i have to just check the max velocity for the p-515 with pianoteq in this case and in it can’t reach 127 I shave is some in the top.

I can't rich velocity above 115 with p-515 set to default touch sensitivity, but I used only my fingers, not a hummer 😁

hi JJHLH! I also want to explore the VST route using my Yamaha AG N2. I have no idea how to set this up... what type of cable should I buy to connect my piano to my macbook? Where did you buy the garritan cfx software? How do you record a video and piano sound together? I tried recording myself using my iphone but the sound was awful. weblinks / Ideas/ inputs please. thank you!
