Hey guys, I own a Yamaha N-1 and it's definitely the best purchase I've made. I LOVE the realistic, sensitive touch. While I enjoy every moment when I play it with Garritan CFX with my Sennheiser headphones, I do find the built-in speakers rather bad.

If I am looking for an upgrade in terms of the acoustics, given that I will continue to play with VST on, should I invest the money on a high-end digital with the best speaker system (e.g. N3X), or would it be more cost-effective to spend the money on great speakers? Or maybe I don't need to spend 20k EUR on speakers to get good results?

And to those who use external speakers for your digital piano: What speakers are you guys using? What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your opinion! smile

Well, I'm currently using a pair of studio monitors -- the KRK Rokit 5 G4. I think they are very good with producing a rich piano sound. Though I'm limited in the fact that I can't place those speakers directly above my keyboard, I do enjoy the sound that originates from my right when ever I pull up a piano VST. Granted that I'm using a midi controller.
As for N1, N3X, ETC, if you are not planning to use the built-in sounds in the instrument, I think just get a pair of speakers would be fine. There's no need to upgrade to another keyboard if all you're using is VST pianos.
Hope this helps! smile

If you could afford it you might want to consider a Yamaha acoustic upright/grand with their TransAcoustic or Silent system installed.

I think once you get past 10 grand it really should included wood and strings as well.

God bless,
David

Your piano already has good action, and you already have computer with Garritan connected with MIDI OUT.
IMHO the best option is to buy a good DAC/hedphone amplifier and a pair of good reference monitors (speakers). Connect DAC to computer using USB, and headphones and monitors - to DAC/amp.

I use Garritan CFX with a Kawai VPC1 and a pair of Genelec 8330 monitors. It’s a great setup. The only thing I’d change is to swap the VPC1 for a real hybrid controller/piano like your N1. For less than the extra cost of the N3X you can get a set of speakers that are way better than those built in the N3X.

thanks for the suggestion! May I ask how you connect the studio monitors to your laptop? Do you use an audio interface or just a DAC?

Is a Dac/Headphone amplifier strong enough to run the studio monitor? Do I need an audio interface? smile

I can highly recommend Genelec 8331 monitors and 7350 sub. I’m very pleased with the sound from my VSTs using this combination. The monitors are only 0.7 meters from my ears, which helps reduce the influence of my untreated room acoustics. The GLM kit is also very useful in helping to optimize the sound.

The N1X has a built in audio interface which makes connecting them very easy. The N1 requires a separate interface, but that also gives you more options.

I think you have more options with your own monitors and the N1X. I happen to dislike the look of the N3X anyway, but that's just me. 😁
