Unless I was specifically instructed not to look at it, I’d not only look at it but I’d even practice it! Lol. Shhhhhhhhh! Thank goodness I’m not taking the spring exam.

They can probably send you that during the video call or share a screen with you so you can see it . That would make more sense (at least that's what I would do if I was the examiner). That might work for normally-visioned students with tablet devices and/or printers, but that wouldn't describe everyone.

I think few would be able to resist and many would probably not have that qualifier ("Unless I was specifically instructed not to look at it")

My daughter tried one and got suspended for honor code violations in her first year!

Registration for August exams just opened up. They don’t yet know if it will be in-person or online. What to do? What to do? Sign up? Postpone? Skip grade? Just talking out my thoughts, that’s all.

I think you should just skip the grade. Just like I don't think one should skip ahead if one isn't ready to move on, I don't think one should hold oneself back just for an exam. You are learning for you, not the exam. The exam is just "keeping score."

You are learning for you, not the exam. The exam is just "keeping score." I was thinking I'll start working on grade 2 material but do the grade 1 exam in January. Hopefully, physical distancing will be relaxed by then? But I guess we'll never know until we get there. But if I get too far ahead in grade 2 that I'm close to ready for the grade 2 exam, then I guess it makes total sense to just skip grade 1. Sounds like this will be likely. Just wait and see.

If you have the discipline to work on grade 2 material with a grade 1 exam coming up, then more power to you! I know that for me, I would end up stopping on grade 2 material and just rehashing my grade 1 material over and over again before the exam. But then again, I was always this way even at the university. So my recommendation that you skip might just reflect my own tendencies to worry something to death. If I postponed myself, I would just end up doing more grade one stuff (specifically the grade 1 exam material) for a few more months and not spend so much time on grade 2 as might have been planned. At least the 3-4 weeks before the grade 1 exam, I would end up using up rehashing grade 1 and practicing grade 1.

https://www.rcmusic.com/learning/examinations/spring-2020-exams-update#panel-298For those who were going to take spring/summer RCM exams. I just submitted three date/time combos for my online test for grade 1. They said up to 10 days to get back to me with whether those times work. It gave me a range from May 20 -> Late August that I could pick from. Weirdly, there was little guidance around what date/time combos work for the examiners.

I’m ok with that even if it means my grade 2 material will have to wait a bit. It will also mean I’ll have a lot of time to let the pieces “marinade”. And I’ll get a head start on grade 2 stuff this fall.

Apparently, ABRSM invented a new exam .. "Performace - Focused Grade" running in parallel with the "usual" exams... So if you can't sight-read / clap / sing / do scales or chords.. etc.. and can only play.. you can still get your Grade because this one only marks the playing For those who want the additional stuff ... the in person exams will still have them apparently =88271]https://gb.abrsm.org/en/about-us/news/articles/?abrsm[newsId]=88271

If I get tired of all that sight-reading, clapping, and technical stuff of the RCM, I would consider doing this ABRSM exam.

AMEB also has performance only exams. I would not even consider such a thing as I thing the benefits of a broader musical education are more important.

Finished the level 7 online theory exam. It was transitioned to the online version because of Covid 19. Let's just say it was easy, much easier than preparing for an in person exam. For example, music history and terms. Just have your book handy and you can answer the questions. You wouldn't be able to do this with an in person exam. You might actually have to know some stuff to pass

The online exams will be around after the pandemic is over. And I thought I was being smart.
