My Casio PX-870 came in, yay! I also have Alfred's Adult All-in-One part 1, and I'm trying out Piano Marvel with the free trial. Additionally I have my first trial lesson with a teacher later today, and two more at the start of next month since I figured I'd try out a few teachers to see which I like the most. Then after summer I'll start lessons since the teachers all have a 2 month vacation. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me! Any tips are also welcome smile.

I did do some self-teaching a bit more than a year ago, and my fingers remember a bit more than I anticipated, which makes me happy heheh.

Nice one, Vantastic.

There’s also a thread on here for 'Piano Marvel' so pop in if you get stuck.

Very nice, remember this is a marathon not a sprint.

Make sure you give your hands adequate rest between practice sessions.

Limit your time on the piano the first couple of weeks to make sure you don't injure yourself.

Congrats Vantastic!
Good to see this beautiful positive energy!

Since this is a marathon, the most useful tip is to be consistent!
Even if you just play for 30 min each day.
Just make this a habit and never stop.

A small tip to make this a durable habit:
start small, don't put the bar too high to start with.
But make a contract with yourself of doing this every day. Even for 5 minutes if you can't do more.
you may think that 5 min is not enough.
Indeed, you won't make much progress in 5 min!
But this will fix this habit in your daily life.
For as long as you want.

A bonus tip for this: use an "anchor".
I mean, schedule your piano session in relation to existing habits you have.
It could be as simple as your dinner.

I use that for doing push-ups and it is quite efficient: after brushing my teeth, I do a series of push-ups. So it become part of the same routine in the end.

Very naturally.
And I am not really a workout guy initially wink

Keep going!

Thanks for the nice words and the tips everyone! I definitely plan on making it a habit - but limiting my time initially is going to be hard frown I'm a bit obsession prone. Luckily my hands aren't 'weak' because I play a lot of rhythm games, but I'll watch out for injuries for sure! Think a problem is going to be posture and neck pains though, since I /never/ sit up right, whoops.

Also, @treefrog, I didn't think it too difficult once I got the knuckle movement right! Kept hitting white keys too initially though.

Great news, Vantastic! I'm anxious to hear your first impressions/review of the PX-870. I'm betting that you'll love it as much as I'm enjoying mine! If you have any questions or are looking for some pointers, feel free to message me.

I really like it so far! The sound is nice and the keys and action feel good to me (though I'm not sure how much that counts with my lack of experience). We did have some trouble with assembly but once that was done I was very happy - it's so pretty! The dark brown is very nice too, and the MIDI for Piano Marvel was just a quick plug and play.

My trial lesson was fun too! I have another two in a few weeks because I figured it'd be good to see what teacher suits me best. But this one was very nice and proved to me that I /can/ play by ear even though I always thought I sucked at things like that. And he told me my 'aanslag' (uhh. Dutch to English.. the way my fingers move on the piano.. like their posture) was good so at least I don't have to worry about that when self-teaching this summer smile

I also started with that same book and really enjoyed it! I'd recommend working from the Faber edition too - they complement each other well. Good luck!

I've been playing the piano since Jan '18.
More recently, I passed Grade 6 with distinction and plan to take Grade 7 in late 2021.

I am documenting my progress, recitals and experiences of learning how to play the piano as an adult on my YouTube channel.
