Hi Folks!

I wanted to get your opinion about Yamaha N2. My choir director is selling his 1yr old Yamaha Avantgrand N2 for 5K. I'm very tempted to buy it sounds like a great deal but I want to hear your experience about this piano and is this amount something reasonable? I have played it actually and I really liked the touch and the sound.

I know it's an older technology but that's my max budget and I can't afford the price of N1x. I looked into NU1x but it's an upright and I really wanted to get the grand touch mechanism to improve my technique.

I don't record really that much and mostly play pure piano sound using the speakers and sometimes headphones. Yes it's not the latest CFX technology but I really don't know that's much of a difference.

Currently I own a CLP645 but if I can sell it then I only have few grand to add. I seldom used the bluetooth in my CLP645 and rarely connected my ipad to control it.

I hope to hear a fair unbiased input from all sides of this room and not to miss other aspects that might worth considering. Thank you!

If you primarily play piano and like the N2 built-in piano sound, I would say go for it.

I am not sure if this is a great deal though. If it was $4k, I would say it is a great deal. A friend purchased used N1 in mint condition for $3.3k last year (just as a reference).

I have been tracking used prices on AvantGrands for a few years. I like to negotiate hard but this is a friend, the ask price is excellent, and this is a low-risk transaction IMHO. I would pay near ask, in cash; if you don't like to negotiate, 5k still is an excellent value.

The N2 has some significant upgrades IMO to the N1 and NU1x, particularly with respect to design and speakers.

The N2 rarely comes to market. There are a few for sale now but that is not normal.

The N2 still is in Yamaha's current line up, although the sound engine is a bit older than the other AvantGrands I think.

You can find new prices for the N2 on the sticky thread here at PW.

Some sample ASK prices of N2 used market today (terms differ by seller)
2016 FL $7,000 PianoBuyer
2015 NY $8,250 PianoBuyer
2012 NY $5,000 PianoBuyer
2018 NY $9490 ebay

Last year we found ~4 N2 on the used market with these ASK prices
http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...amaha-n2-models-deluging-east-coast.html

A dealer may (or not) be able to provide remaining warranty but you may lose warranty on purchase from private party. Shipping and taxes may be applicable. These are very heavy to move.

I thought $4,500 used was a good target price for the N2 in 2018 in below thread lol.

On one hand, there were a lot of N3 on the market then. On the other hand, we are in a global liquidity and valuation crisis now.

I think 5K for a one-year-old Avantgrand N2 is a very good price. That’s about half of the new price. I don’t know about the USA, but here in Europe the N2 is new still sold for around €10.000,-. ($10.815,-).
Go for it if you like the touch and sound and don’t need Bluetooth connectivity or other means of connecting with VST. That’s still possible trough a Midi/USB connector.

Don’t get distracted by terms of ‘older technology’, because the N2 is even today a great instrument. Especially because of it’s great amplification and speaker system.

Recently I had a unique chance to compare the N2 with the N1X and NU1X and with Kawai’s NV10 and NV5 all in one store! And you know what? For me the N2 was the clear winner when playing by it’s own speaker system. The sound projection of the N2 was superior over the others. I have to admit, the headphone experience on the N1X and the NU1X was better. But going back from those to the N2, it took me only 5 minutes to get adjusted again to the somewhat less spacious and less powerful headphone experience on the N2. I used Sennheiser HD 598 and Sennheiser IE 80, both great headphones.

Another plus point of the N2 over the N1X, NU1X and the Kawai Novus NV10 and NV5, is the beautiful Ivorite® key surface of the N2. That has something luxurious about it compared with the acrylite key tops of the other instruments.

The main piano sample of the N2 is taken from Yamaha’s former flagship piano the CFIII-S. A beautiful warm and dark piano sample. I preferred it over the CFX sample of the N1X and NU1X.

The piano sound of the Kawai NV10 and NV5 could not please my ears. But that’s just a matter of taste. Both pianos are great instruments with very nice actions. I was very much surprised by the very nice action of the NV5. Especially how it responded to touch. Way better than the Yamaha NU1X.

Now, because I own the Avantgrand N2 myself, you could call me biased, and maybe I‘ am. But I went to that store to do a thorough comparison to find out if there came up a desire to replace my N2 with a more recent instrument.
I went home with a happy feeling that I still own one of the best digital piano’s the market offers today.

So out of my experience with this instrument, I can assure you that you will have a great piano for many years to come, if you consider to buy that one.

$5k for a 1 year old N2 is a great deal, assuming it's in good condition. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I was in the market.

The N2 is excellent. As has already been mentioned the Ivorite keytops are superb. It may not have the latest technology but that is far less important than the action, which is wonderful. I think you will be extremely happy with this piano.

Thank you everyone for the input. It was enlightening to me especially may affirmed the price is a great deal. I sent a message to my choir director and told him we have a deal. I hope he doesn't back out now for the price we've agreed upon.

Yes, the model is not the latest but I know this will serve me for a very long time and I'd be very happy with it. I'm not a professional pianist and with my needs, I believe this step up model is more than enough. This will push me to practice and play more again because somehow I have to justify to hubby the price I'm paying this time. lol

I just have to figure out how much can I sell my CLP 645 two years old and put it out in the market for sale.

Definitely not going to the dealer anymore because they will just give me a cheap trade in price.

I would especially like an N2 for its size. The speaker column allows it to have a smaller footprint. I could just about fit one into my digital piano space, but not the N1/X.

I also prefer the CFIII-S sample. I love it on my N2 and when I owned my CP4 I used CFIII-S sample.

I'm not here to dis the CFX sample but it has always struck me that when the N1X, NU1X, N3X were introduced people were quick (IMO,) to take sides and push the older N1, 2, 3 as older, thus inferior. (I'm not here to debate the Binaural Sampling.) I think the the CFIII-S is closer to a Steinway sound than the CFX.

The CFX Chick Corea has in his home sounds amazing but the CFIII-S was widely used for many years.

Actually, the fact that I prefer the older sample has saved me tons of money as I would of considered upgrading if the X series had blown me away.

edit: I've been noticing my Ivorite keys have yellowed a bit and I love the look and of course the feel.

another edit: I've been playing my N2 with the top closed. It adds the warmth and darkness.

I enjoy my N2. I'd buy a used one at that price. Nice purchase ;0

If I’m not mistaken the CF-IIIs was a fairly close copy of the Steinway D, while the CFX design is something more unique to Yamaha.

I've never heard of that, nor should I of. That is interesting to learn. Thanks.

Interesting; I’ve heard the complete opposite.

‘the new X line is more like Steinway: richer overtones, not harsh and bright, yet strident when pushed to its limits’.

You are misinterpreting their sometimes difficult to understand model names. CX is the mainstream grand line. . CF is the premium line. CFX is the concert grand flagship of the CF line.

I wrote a side by side Piano Buyer review of the previous C7 vs the newer C7X, prepared by the same technician, in a small recital space at Yamaha Artist Services in NYC, about 5 years ago. That was one of my favorite reviews to write.
