The tally so far: Fazioli: 2 Steinway: 1 They'll be posting two of my videos on Tuesday, made on separate occasions, one on a Steinway B and the other on an Estonia 274. That will bring the tally to: Steinway: 7 (3 NY and 4 Hamburg) Fazioli: 2 Estonia: 1 Unknown: 1 (I can't tell what Xiao Chen was playing)

Once a person took the decision to study music for their career, that is it. The intention to make money from music was there, and was pursued seriously at one time. So if someone decides to pursue music seriously, gets accepted into a conservatory, takes lessons from an excellent professor for a few months, but flunks their first jury and is forced out of the program......are they still considered a professional? Seems to me, no matter how good their intentions, if they don't "have the goods" in the first place there's no way they can be considered anything but amateur. People who get accepted into a conservatory and got an excellent professor must be of a good quality of pianist. Once, he or she crossed the line, that is it. I have a good friend who is like that, won concerto competition at his conservatory and quit after two years. He won or placed at several amateur competitions. I consider him also one of those people, he should not enter amateur competitions. A line needs to be drawn, and education is the most fair one. Volkov is just the extreme example, he is the top of ex-professional. The worst of ex-professional (degree people) are still the same as good real amateurs or even better. Very few real amateurs can surpass degree people. There are some, but very unlikely. Ipse dixit, nothing more.

So we're back to some pianists being just too good. I don't think that was where ClasscLib was really going with his, sorry their, remark and it wouldn't apply to your view, I believe, because yours has a decent axiomatic foundation, at least as far as I understand it.

So, you guys know Latin? Mostly Legal Latin, which is indeed a peculiar branch of the Indo-European Tree.

I am going to speculate (without looking) that the average age of the 45 competitors chosen in 2020 is lower than in previous years. I would also speculate that the prevalence of post-baccalaurate music degree education is greater among the 2020 competitors than previously. And even if neither of the foregoing generalizations is true, I would speculate that future winners are going to be younger and more degreed than previously.
The issue of whether they now or ever have made money from their piano playing is less likely to make them ringers than than if they are only a few months or years away playing in under-30 elite competitions: the youngest ones haven't had time enough yet to make any money at all!
Those of us who have had no college- or graduate-level music education are probably at less of a disadvantage that those with graduate degrees who never had an artist-level teacher.
Am I the only over-65 who would like to see a senior age division for amateur piano competitions, as there is in professional and amateur sports (golf, running, etc.?) ?

Does anyone else think the level will be extraordinarily high in this rescheduled competition? Since those who have been accepted will be given right of first refusal, you guys now have two full years to practice your rep and do trial performance runs! I am looking forward to some amazing playing once it rolls around. Alas, for me it looks like this will push back my eligibility two years. I was hoping to do it in 2024 when I would be 35, but now that there is one in 2022 I'm guessing there won't be one until 2026

Am I the only over-65 who would like to see a senior age division for amateur piano competitions, as there is in professional and amateur sports (golf, running, etc.?) ? Personally, I think that would be a great idea - and I'm well over 65.
