He’s a brilliant artist. I got to hear him live in a Rome two years ago; what a treat! His performance of Prokofiev’s Precipitato from the 7th sonata is my favorite. His interpretation is electric and tense yet he doesn’t rush it like so many pianists. He makes you sit up in your seat and chew your nails. Happy 70th! 🎂

His performance of the A minor Waltz was amazing.Before listening to that I had never heard a performance of that waltz that ever made me think it was anything other than a very minor composition favored by relative beginners because of its technical simplicity.

I actually thought he was older He is one of the very few pianists that I will go listen to even if he plays just Beethoven or Mozart, composers I normally try to avoid...the amazing quality of the piano sound alone is worth it. I have a ticket now to a postponed recital, hopefully it will happen.

I went to Brussels to see him two years ago. He's extraordinary. I got to hear him live in a Rome two years ago; what a treat! Was that the Haydn and Schubert?

Sokolov has an entirely unique and incredibly compelling interpretation of the Chopin's Etude 25/12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhLunFajgwgI am aware that it may not be in the traditional style of Chopin and thus not to everyone's taste, and I absolutely love Pollini's more traditional interpretation as well, but this is just insanely remarkable playing - especially live. Many complain that people don't play this etude up to the marked tempo - and they are correct, barely anybody does. Lisitsa actually does play at 160bpm, but when I heard her performance I thought, "Oh wow, I hate this etude played that fast." Sokolov is in excess of 170bpm in parts of this, but it is musical and doesn't sound rushed. A huge achievement. Pretty much anything he touches is interesting to me. I have a huge respect for him. By the way....that performance was an encore AFTER he played Brahms 2!
