All of us will have seen several efforts by groups of classical musicians during the current lockdown to produce a coherent and musical version of a 'concert performance' by recording each musician separately in their homes, and then 'joining' everyone up into the picture and sound.

But what would we see and hear if the whole thing was professionally produced?

Here's an amazing program made by the BBC for Holy Week, and broadcast on Easter Day in the UK. The quality is astonishingly good, with excellent stereo sound (though not a church acoustic, obviously) and visuals of the individual singers of the Tenebrae choir. The music starts with Bach's Passion Chorale (from Matthäus-Passion), and the longest work is the well-known Allegri Miserere, complete with pure top C's from the solo soprano.

(N.B. The program may not be available outside of the UK)

Ah it seems this only works in the UK. What a shame, it sounds lovely.

Unfortunately, the program is not available on YT (yet).

BTW, the announcer said prior to the broadcast that the singers were all singing live in their homes while watching their conductor on their computer screens, i.e. the performances weren't "patched" together later. How did they all manage to sing in perfect tune?......OK, they must all have perfect pitch. (They had no headphones on, so presumably they can't hear the other singers).

Here are other YTs of the Tenebrae choir performing the same music:
