Hi,

I'm trying to work on my sight reading but I'm finding that I'm constantly running out of printed material, so I was considering buying an ipad / tablet that i could use to view sheet music online. I was wondering if anyone has tried this?

I don't want to spend too much money since this is the only thing i'd use it for, but I assume if it's too small, it will be difficult to read from.

Thanks,

Hiya.

I’ve tried it on my 10.5” iPad... it works but I’m dyslexic and find that it’s too small for me to read correctly. Yes, you can pinch zoom PDF files. Not tried any of the proper apps (stuff that connects to your piano, or just piano score apps) to comment.

For reading, having something backlit definitely helps me personally.... just I need a larger format.

I can hardly sight read anyway, so perhaps someone more skilled can chip in!

Learning to play. Consciously incompetent, which apparently is a good starting point. smirk

Thanks, I had a few 10.5" tablets on my list but I was concerned that they'll be a bit small to read, so I think i'll only look at 12" models for now!

I think my plan is just to pull music from imslp / the internet, no need for annotation apps etc.

Anyway regardless it does seem as if any 12" model is going to be fairly pricey, perhaps I should just buy a bundle of sheet music of the appropriate level afterall!

An iPad Pro 12.9 is great for this, but for less money you could just download a bunch of music and print it out, or use something like SightReadingFactory.com, or go to garage sales or eBay and buy a bunch of books, etc. With a smaller iPad you can always turn it sideways. Lots of options.

I have the same problem, but Forscore lets you do half pages zoomed in so that is more normal sized music for me. I also purchased the Page Flip Firefly, and while I've not quite mastered using it, but works much better.

If you have quite a bit of printed music you've sight read you can cycle through it again. Although not exactly the same as sight reading, if you haven't seen the music for a while it would be close enough to sight reading to benefit your sight reading.

Whatever sheet music reading or training app you plan to use, be sure that it’s available on the operating system of the tablet you plan to get. Most tablets run either iOS or Android, so if you want to run an app that only runs on Windows, you need a Windows tablet like a Surface Pro or a Dell clone or similar.

But these tend to be higher end and expensive unfortunately.

I use the Acer Aspire Z3 (Z3-700)17,3 Zoll.

https://www.amazon.de/Acer-Tablet-PC-Celeron-Graphics-schwarz/dp/B018790XN4

It looks big, but it is just big enough to display a us letter format in its original size.

I would never use a smaller display.
