I am considering purchasing a new Estonia 168 for 30K and would like to know what other brands I should consider for this price. I grew up playing a Kawai 5'1", so I actually just purchased the Kawai GE-1 (1990). Before I took delivery, I realized that I should consider buying something that I can pass down to my daughter who also plays. I expect to play myself for about 30 more years. When I went back to the dealer to look at other brands and up my budget a bit, I played a used Estonia 2008 (at 18K). I was in awe at the sound and the ease of the action. It had a matte finish that didn't tickle my fancy. The dealer has a brand new ebony polished estonia that I will play next week after it is unboxed. This is a huge investment for me. I am not versed enough on higher-end brands to know what is available at this price point. I tried to look at websites to price search but not having much luck. I am working with a very reputable dealer who carries a lot of inventory. If anyone can offer any advice or guidance I would appreciate the information. I am an intermediate player who plans to up the game a bit!

Also at the Piano Buyer (thanks for the mention, Carey) is the new piano pricing database tool, which allows you to browse by price; size, finish, etc.

Good luck! I own an Estonia L168 (2018) and enjoy it tremendously. It is a great piano.

You can also conduct a search for "Estonia" on this forum site and find a plethora of information.

I also agree with Carey, that is a good price.

Hi Jeffmeister - have you tried the new 168 yet? If so, how was it? I’m considering one myself but have to travel to get to the nearest dealer. I was quoted the same price.

That is a wonderful price for a wonderful piano. I hope you find it’s voice as beautiful as I found my L190 to have. Best Wishes! Please keep us posted.

My Estonia 168 is celebrating her 20th birthday this year. She would like a trip to the spa for some voicing, regulation and tuning, but all in due time. In the meantime, she looks and sounds like a 15 year old, and we are still madly in love. She loves it when I play "All the Things you are". And 30.000 for a new Estonia? It sounds like a dream come true to me.

I was able to purchase a new Estonia L168 about 18 months ago. I enjoy it tremendously. It continues to blossom more each week. I am blessed to have an excellent technician to help me nurture it along. Estonia make a wonderful piano.

Yes there is a large Estonia fan club on PW. We have been called a “cult”. That may be true too. Estonia’s seem to have a “cult of personality” of a clear, sweet, singing voice that captivates the owner/player. Best Wishes! Perhaps you’ll join us?

The Estonias are premium built pianos at a price many can still afford. I tried the 168 and 190 about 10 years ago and I loved their tone and build quality. You might also want to try the Shigeru Kawai line as well. For a few thousand more the SK2 might offer you a broader dynamic range or at least compare the 168 to the 190 to see what a larger piano may offer you.

Well, let’s just say when I went piano shopping recently, my list ended up with #1 = Estonia 168. I didn’t end up buying it because I didn’t trust myself I’d stick with piano long enough. So I promised myself if I’m still serious about piano in a few years and pass RCM grade 5, I will buy one. I just fell in love with the Estonia 168.
