Questions arise here from time to time around the subject of setting up virtual pianos.
I thought it might be helpful to have a guide for that so I created one here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NQTB8Qma06NcF9OU4xSS-g-0VQUov3Zo

This could be added to the master sticky thread. But first ... I'd like to invite a review and to solicit opinions, additions, corrections, and updates.

So there it is ...

MacMacMac - I like it. I didn't know how this works before and now I understand it. What more do you need?

Intro, item #2, some people can use a USB connector from the digital piano so don't need an external interface

Part 1, maybe a photo of midi din cable

Part 2, are the laptop internal typically called "sound cards" rather than generic interfaces
Part 2, you can connect to headphones via 3.5mm trs jack
Part 2, can some new digital pianos use one USB cable to output MIDI and receive audio?

Maybe quick comment on ASIO drivers and buffer sizes to boost performance.

Maybe reference the sticky with the headphones, forum topics, VIs

@Martinez: What more do I need? Well, anything that's missing. If I knew what's missing I'd have put it in. So I'm relying on group-think to fill any gaps.

@newer player: Welcome back to America! smile
1. The USB-only connection is covered on the second page, part 1, item 3. Is more explanation needed?

2. I like the idea of putting photos of the connectors. Will do.

3. I will make mention of the 3.5 mm TRS jack. It's implied in part 2, item 4 diagram. But I'll need to be explicit.

4. The part about using USB to send MIDI and receive audio ... my piano (an oldie) doesn't have that, so I don't know how to describe that.
Could you download the Word doc, edit in whatever you see fit. and send it back?

5. Yes, there's no mention of ASIO and buffers. I'll need to add that. And also mention that it's not needed on a Mac.
I could use some help with this. In particular, screenshots of ASIO4All, and screenshots of the ASIO control panel of any other ASIO driver.
I'll supply them for the Presonus "Universal Control" driver.

Off to Montreal soon.

1. If a digital piano has USB out, then it does not need an external audio interface, so that is a bit confusing

4. I only have DIN midi controllers so don't know how those work from a practical perspective

There's a significant amount of Covid-19 in Quebec.

I suggest bringing masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer (which is difficult to find in BC, and we have less Covid-19 than Quebec).

I don't envy you the trip -- you might be in self-enforced quarantine for a while.

My American buddy has a monster Ford F250 pick up truck loaded with food and we are driving to a remote location outside Québec with no neighbours. We should be ok for a while.

I think there should be at least some short reference that if you would like to use a virtual piano setup for
- either professional use
- or online jamming etc. with others (can be relevant in these times impacted by the coronavirus especially)

then it can be worth to study your OS settings for low latency.

I'm having a hard time knowing whether you're serious or not.
You claimed location changes frequently. You've spanned the globe in just a few weeks.
So is this true?

Or is just another Easter egg? (If the latter, it's appropriately timed, eh?)

Nice! And it's a good time of year to be there. Cool, but not too. And fresh air. Nice.

Mac thank you SO MUCH for this simple straightforward information. I am not a tech savvy pianist but became interested in this after joining the forum. Are there certain brands or types of speakers that are better for this use?

FYI, I have taken input from you guys, above, and I have updated the document accordingly.

I just now sent a PM to the mod asking for this item to be added to the master sticky.
