Steinway Model N questions

Hi,
2 questions regarding an old Steinway Model N upright.

1. How does one remove the damper rod? The lever unscrewed easily enough but is in the way of the action bracket and I can’t slide the rod out without fear of snapping one of the hooks off.

2. Just trying to identify what cloth was used under the hammer butt flanges and what a modern equivalent would be. (See pic)
Thanks
Andrew

aroscoe01, I think it would help you to read the second post in this thread: Kindness and patience

I would like, respectfully and gently and kindly and a little wistfully, to suggest that your request for information comes across as somewhat peremptory.

You seem to have recently joined this Forum. Would you like to introduce yourself, and tell us a little about your project? It sounds as if you are a hobbyist, rather than a piano technician - is that right?

We are generally pleased to help with DIY enquiries if we can. If you are undertaking some work on this Steinway upright piano, I think I'd suggest that stripping a Steinway action right down to the rails is...… ambitious.
