Hi, I need help sorting the digital music creation software universe. My goal is to just have backing tracks so I can enjoy playing 9or trying to) songs at home a la r. Clayderman.

I’ve heard many names, Ableton, Bianca, VST, DAW etc. I need an “explanation for dummies”. I have a Roland digital piano as well as an acoustic grand, classically trained. Thanks in advance!

With a "DAW" you have to create the backing tracks yourself.

Band-In-A-Box (a specific product name) has backing rhythms made by somebody else.

Many modern Roland pianos also offer backing rhythms via their free mobile app.

I used Band in a Box for a longtime, it had way more functionality than I needed so I had to spend a lot of time just figuring out how to do the simple things I wanted to do, which was have a drum and bass to play with. But I was interested in backing tracks for jazz, so there were a lot of other options. For the genre you mentioned, you probably have to stick with BIAB so you have more flexibility to create your own stuff.

If you are interested in jazz backing tracks, I used a youtube channel called Backingtracks Jazz for a long time, it covers most of the songs in the Realbook. I've moved to iReal Pro in the last 6 months, even though it costs a few bucks for the app, it has more functionality than the youtube channel, but also focuses on songs from fakebooks.

You might ask about backing tracks on the forum "Pianist Corner non-Classical", they talk about backing tracks every now and then.

There also is a distinction between a DAW and mastering software. They overlap in functionality but their core usage is different. Mastering software typically can record 2-channel content (and some are multichannel) but otherwise the emphasis is on transformations to take a recording and polish into a final product.

My chronological list of the top 20 composers: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich.
