So, this brand new Bechstein concert grand D 282 was supposed to be delivered to one of Vienna's major concert halls, but since all these institutions are in complete shutdown mode, the piano could not be delivered there and since day before yesterday is now 'parked' at a partner's small recital hall. I have the key and unlimited access to the room, so I've decided to make use of that unique opportunity for as long as the situation is as it is.

The piano is brand new, but through a forced delay at a storage space during delivery, tuning isn't perfect anymore, but acceptable. There will be some more thorough work done on regulating and voicing the instrument for its final destination, but I thought it might be a good idea to document the process.

So without further ado, here is today's result of my practicing and recording session:

Disclaimer: I work for Bechstein as project manager, but not in Sales and Marketing, so this is more like a private fun project.

Thanks for sharing this! Very interesting as a reference. Did you use the same microphone and interface as in your recordings of the 19th century Steinway?

Best,
Kasper

Yes, matched pair of Røde NT5 with omni capsules into Steinberg interface with Yamaha preamps into a Thinkpad X1 Carbon, recorded with 'Audacity' on Linux. Slightly modified microphone positioning, a little closer to the piano and reduced ORTF-angle.

Thank you for posting. What a gorgeous piano sound. I had scheduled a tuning and maintenance appointment in March for my six month old Estonia. Unfortunately that appointment was canceled and it might just be more months until I can get a tuning scheduled. It’s about 5 cents flat but certainly still playable and lovely. It is setting in. If we’re gonna be in lockdown it’s quite the blessing to go through it with a beautiful piano and spare time to play it.

Thank you ! Such a gorgeous tone !
One day we shall be over this harrowing time and this
piano will be played by a famous pianist in a full concert hall.

What a truly lovely C. Bechstein...a maker I'm partial to. This is an especially nice one, as it should be! Also, love "Le Gibet" and your rendition of it. Very, very nice. It really shows this piano's ability to play mp-ppp throughout the instrument's entire range. Fantastic.

Is this the Bechstein version of the Steinway Spirio or Yamaha Disklavier Pro? I don't see the keys moving. :-)

It's a still picture of the piano in the hall where I played and recorded without a safety net. Which is why this doesn't really come close to Michelangeli's rendition on a different Bechstein..

Wonderful piano and wonderful playing! Le Gibet is a great choice for showing off a piano.

Here is a little update after a couple of days of playing and practicing. In the meantime our master technician came over and did the whole work, i.e. regulating, tuning and thorough voicing. Only internal microphones of the OnePlus 5 used this time, but they record really decent stereo.

Hi,

Thanks again for sharing this! If you by chance did another recording with the omni NT5's and the same positions as in the first take, I would be delighted to listen. It would be highly interesting to compare before and after regulation/tuning. The room sounds nice for recordings too.

Es grüsst Sie aus Dänemark,
Kasper

Very nicely done; thank you.

The piano sounds wonderful. Now, perhaps, a piece that doesn't use the una corda throughout. It would be nice to hear this piano's full voice.

Regards,

Thanks for your input. I will continue practicing and bring some more equipment into it to document the recordings. So, as a next step I will do a parallel audio/video and then stitch these together with kdenlive, my software of choice since I run Linux only.

Good point about una corda throughout. I'll add Brahms Op 118.2 and Scriabin Op. 11.1+2 to the mix to give you a better idea about the dynamics.

Anyway, this piano will be used for a streaming recital very soon with a real pianist, so that'll be better to get an idea about its capabilities.

OE1FEU,

It's nice, as a change of pace around here, to hear a well-tuned piano!
Thanks also for being brave and posting up videos of yourself. Nice playing.
I'm pretty impressed with the quality for a cell phone recording-- my wife (who's much more into technology) uses one of these, and I never really paid attention to it.

Just stunning. Not a bad way to pass time isolating.

Well I wish I had a cell phone that records like the one used in this video !
