Hi all,

So... the pandemic has put my house move on hold and so my dreams of getting a high end clavinova will have to be paused for now.

That means I am looking for a temporary option, one that is significantly cheaper and takes up less space while I stay in the flat.

So far, someone has recommended the Yamaha P45, which comes in at £349.

My main wants are the best sound quality possible for a lower budget option. The other hope is for the weighted keys to be effective and not feel too 'keyboardy'.

I would appreciate any thoughts, recommendations or suggestions.

Thank you,
Emma

I have used a roland fp-10 for the last 6 months.. and I have been very satisfied! It's been everything I hoped for. I think it's around the same price as the Yamaha p45 -+ 50 dollars maybe. The in-built speakers are not spectacular but with headphones or external speakers I think the sound is very good. I like the keys but don't really have any other digital pianos to compare against.
Hope you can use it!

In that price range, Roland pianos are a great value. You get a very decent action - e.g. PHA-4 standard in FP-10. Make sure that you like their sound - some love it and some hate it.

Kawai ES110 and Yamaha P-125 are other two highly recommended options. Figure out which sound and action you like by trying out in person (if possible at all in current circumstances).

Good luck in your search!

A Casio from the old generation (PX-150 / PX-160 / PX-350 / PX-360) ) or the new generation (PX-S1000 / PX-S3000 / PX-560).

They have reasonable sound generators, and actions comparable to (or better than) the Yamaha "GHS" in the P-45 etc.

Not terribly expensive, lightweight (for "hammer-action" instruments), easy to store.

You understand (I hope) that _any_ instrument in that class will have under-powered amps, and too-small speakers, to deliver "acoustic piano" volume. But if you need something to play and practice on, they'll all (P-45 / FP-10, etc) do the job.

Often the FP-30 is only a little bit more than the FP-10, so it's worth including the FP-30 in your comparisons.
