This sounds great, but dont use standard sockets. Even a 12 pt wont fit a square. Craftsman makes a star shaped socket that will fit multiple shapes, including square.

You can get a cheap piano wrench for $10 on Amazon. It will have a short handle with less leverage, but it will come with the silencing wedges you need. That's how I started.

If you want to really get ghetto, I have heard that you can fit the square side of a 1/4" drive socket. There are lots of way to improvise a handle. That sounds like the act of a mad man to me though.

Just be sure to make tiny movements on the pins and put your wrench on the right pin as you tune!

Thanks for the tips. I posted my thinking because amateurs tuning our own piano has always been an extremely controversial topic around these parts. But now with the lockdown I better start researching doing my own maintenance. shocked
After watching the “Reinventing the Piano” and the demonstrations with Bit Logic I’m thoroughly convinced I shouldn’t even look at a tuning wrench sideways. I’ll just patiently wait to reschedule my next tuning and maintenance appointment. I’m sure I’ll have to go full ghetto on some other home repairs before this is over. shocked

A thread is not truly controversial unless it hits five pages. wink

Pallid, compared to the knock-down-drag-outs of yore. But, I believe the management lacks faith in the benefits of the kind of pitched battles--- or at any rate, believes them to be too much trouble--- and, the people who have shown that they were impossible to dissuade, have been shown the door.

The solution is obvious, but I am not holding my breath.

Yeah, there were some real cage matches back in the day!

Cage matches--- thank you, Retcasnall! PW meets MMA. Video to follow, live at 10:00p. Put the rugrats to bed. Don't let them do what I did, creeping behind the couch to hear what the big folks were saying, and watching.

On the other hand... I've been reading some threads that were actually educational, even if they went somewhat over my head.

PW vs MMA. Crap I’m way too old and settled to do much as far as cage matches. I’ll have to grow out my hair and increase my workouts with weights. Dang and I’ll have to piece together a flashy outfit. Hey, I’m pretty bored so I’m game. wink

Lol, I knew you were joking. I was too. I was just trying to do my part to cause contraversy. I'm pleasantly surprised at the lack of response. I thought someone might get upset over piano tuning even after seeing the subject title.

Maybe the hardships are bringing out some good in us. 😁👍

Really, how hard can it be? I've got my ebay tuning kit (a good 25$ one not that cheapie), my tuning app all installed, instruction books to read and then I'm just waiting for a spell of wet weather to get down to it.

I really did teach myself to tune it and it wasn't that hard for me. Some people get furious about self tuning though.

I just bought a high quality USA made extendable tuning hammer. I need to put it to use sometime soon.

My money making skills involve networks, wireless, electronic troubleshooting, and circuitry. I can code if I have to. I don’t mess with pianos or engines. The piano and motor vehicles are better for it. wink

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Get out the square end of your socket and tune that Steinway up! LOL

I'm hoping someone more clever than me can combine some of the most controversial threads of the past into one long thread. Something like "As a beginner learning the Rach 3, should I interpret the hairpins literally or practice scales for an hour every day in all keys.......

Have at it!

Scales in every key two handed two octaves for two hours every day. It’s the answer for all piano playing issues. smile

Indeed. My square has 68 keys. I really think that's quite enough.

Scales and other formal methods are a waste of time.
Here's a modern composer who proves it!

I know, because we could never hope to be as innovative and avant grade as that awesome composer! Better to stick to the meat and potatoes stuff, right? thumb
