Tonight from Levit's catalog of Beethoven sonatas, he selected "The Tempest", Op. 31 No. 2 in d minor. Which he characterizes as totally unique, revolutionary. A dark, mysterious and brooding work. True, he takes the final movement at a faster pace than Allegretto, but it works in his interpretation, in my opinion. Others may differ.

Chamber music tonight! Streamed from the Hans Eisler Music School in Berlin, with cellist Julia Hagen. They performed Beethoven's Third Sonata for Cello and Piano in A major, and Brahms Cello Sonata No. 1 in e minor. All the remarks in German, unfortunately I could not understand. Great to see Igor play some chamber music however. The Beethoven was especially very lyrical. Levit used an e-tablet for the score, so no need for a page turner (which would violate the 6' social distance rule anyways). And there was a break in the finale of the Brahms when Julia broke a string. Levit laughingly stopped and kept up a patter of German while she changed the string, then they started the movement again.

Shostakovitch's mammoth 24 Preludes and Fugues was played in its entirety tonight. A work which deserves more hearing and study, obviously inspired by J.S. Bach. Levit completes the final 4 voice fugue in a display of power over adversity, the octaves ringing out triumphantly.
A great start to the weekend. Tomorrow is World Piano Day, 2020, so named for the 88 keys (unless you own a Bosie). The 88th day of the year falls on March 28. Happy playing, stay healthy!

Tonight a little lightness and grace with Mozart's B flat Sonata, K. 570. A sublime work, as Igor says, he played in his youth "when he had a bit more hair", lol.
Enjoy!

Tonight Igor offered up something different: 4 introspective pieces, mainly piano transcriptions.
First up, the famous "Adagietto" from Mahler's 5th Symphony. Here Levit showcases his ability to sustain long phrases in lieu of the orchestral strings. Wonderful pedaling and legato throughout.
Next up another transcription, this from a song by pop artist Billy Joel, "And So It Goes". Perhaps a nod to New York City, Billy Joel's hometown, now the epicenter of the virus. Very touching and sincere.
Followed by "A Mensch", an original work written by Frederic Rzweski, which Igor characterizes as an ode to being a good human being, which is what is called for in these days.
Ending with a piano transcription of the famous Irish folk song "Danny Boy", beautiful, moving, heartbreaking.

More Beethoven this evening. "The Hunt" Sonata, full of vim and vigor (from Igor). His joy in playing is palpable. He also posted a video on his YouTube channel of him playing the Billy Joel transcription "And So It Goes", as a yoga exercise (seated on the ground backwards, with his hands crossed behind him). Still sounded pretty good.

Tonight's program, mainly Liszt and Brahms.
One of the Petrarca Sonetto's from Book 2 of Annees de Peleriage, followed by the famous A major Intermezzo of Brahms.
Ending with a glorious reading of the Wagner/Liszt arrangement of "Liebestod" from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.
