Victor's wisdom applies to any instrument or genre. Back when I was playing bass I discovered Victor and his amazing family and have been following Vic since. His book "The Music Lesson" is one of my favorites on the spiritual side of playing music. Victors and other from the Jazz world talk about learning music in the same way you learn to speak as a child and makes so much sense.

So do yourself a favor and listen to wise man Victor Wooten being interviewed by Dom Famularo. If you haven't watched one of Dom's videos before he has a whole series of them with legendary rhythm section musicians. Dom is an excellent interviewer.

Hi

The Sessions is a great series of interviews. I second MrShed's recomendation. These are intelligent interviews about the process of becoming a professional musician, as well as the practicalities of being one. Initially it was mostly drummers (Peter Erskine, Steve Gadd, Steve Smith etc) as Dom Famularo is a drummer himself, but the scope has broadened now and Dom interviews people from all areas of the music business, including keyboard players. A year or so ago he interviewed most of the Elton John band, which was fascinating.

If you're stuck in your house, and you want to learn about what it takes to become a professional musician then this series of interviews will keep you occupied for a few weeks at least. I haven't watched them all, but as the names above indicate this focuses mainly on the Jazz / Rock area of music, rather than classical.

Thanks for posting MrShed.

Cheers

MrShed , thanks for posting! I also remember Dom, who taught me a little lesson in coordination with rhythm eight years ago in Latvia .

Great stuff, thanks. I took a couple of decades off from bass, only got back into it about a decade ago, and started discovering new (to me) bassists such as Wooten. Not only a great player, but a consummate professional.

I'm exactly the same. I came across Victor Wooten when I came back to bass and have the same admiration for him as a musician and an educator.

I'd be a far better pianist if I spent the time I'm on this forum playing my piano instead.
