I will never be able to forget that scene (true or not) in Immortal Beloved, when LVB's new piano arrives and he lays his head down on the piano lid, while softly playing the first movement of the "Moonlight" sonata. Broke my heart.

I am so grateful for all the responses. And I am grateful for what hearing I have.

I like and use different earplugs for different purposes.

Foam ones are good for sleeping because they are soft and comfy. More rigid ones are faster to insert and are useful for times when some kid decides that screaming at school is the thing to do. If I had used them throughout my career, my hearing would probably be in better shape right now. I now give them generously to other special educators.

Of course for listening to music, Etymotics or the other nicer ones are the way to go.

Yes for loud environments.

And for private listening, consider audio quality. We listen to a lot of music on the phone or laptop. Those tiny speakers don't come close to reproducing audio. I have my laptops connected to a decent home stereo, and have a pair of quality headphones handy too.

gotta go practice
