Is this picture taken at a strange angle or is this lid off somehow?? It doesn't look right to me.

I think the mover's blanket on the top is distorting how it looks in the photo. It seems normal to me.

Oh, that might be it! My eyes are seeing an unevenness but I think it must just be the pic.

Seems like a number of things. Probably a wide angle lens, and the photo is taken from pretty close to where the lid rises up to, so it seems unusually large. The folded back portion is not laying down flat (probably the blanket), so it's in a different plane than normal. I think even if the lid was folded back completely, it would still look a little distorted because of the angle and perspective.

Wow, the ad says its in used/good condition, but according to the serial number, it's 90 years old! That might explain the price. But I think an M in truly good condition would fetch more than that. But maybe not. I'm not up on Steinway prices.

thumb +1

If I lived close and was piano shopping I might check it out, but wouldn’t expect much for a 90 year old piano at that price. But who knows? I’m no gambler but I would bet that it needs quite a bit of work.

A Steinway model M that old for as much as $3200...

Actually it might be quite good, and to be fair that's probably a good price for a 'core'

Yes, the price is definitely in core territory. Nothing wrong with that. It could be a fair value.

Cracks in the soundboard and needs new hammers. Not a bad piano, just not what I want to take on, unfortunately.

The near end of the front lid is folded back completely on to the main lid. I would therefore have expected the far edge of the front lid to be parallel to the top of the rim on the left-hand side. And it isn't. That does look very peculiar, but I can't explain what is going on.

Well, at least you tried. Viable older Steinways that still play and sound decently well tend to fetch $10k and up.

That's what made me post this. It does look very strange.

The long side of a piano is rarely parallel to the front of the bent side, and the keyboard is rarely perpendicular to either. This becomes evident when the front of the lid is folded back.

I was looking at my Bluthner, where the keyboard is at right angles to the long side. But you are correct. That could be the explanation. The angle between the keyboard and the long side of the piano in the picture would have to be considerably less than ninety degrees.

Actually, more than 90°, as is the case on both of my pianos. Less than 90° would mean that the flap hangs over the edge of the lid, and that is not desirable.
