Hi, I was wondering if a Roland stage DP (such as RD-88) piano sound can be adjusted so it can be brighter like the Yamaha, and not as thin and synthesized? Thanks.

Switched from a frustrated electone to satisfied piano player because there's no lack of music sheet for piano.

No chance.

All the tweaks in the world will not make a Roland sound like a Yamaha.

Challenge accepted! Do VSL Synchron CFX, Garritan CFX and Spectrasonics Keyscape count as "tweaks?" smile

Why do so many people use Roland then? If it doesn't really sound like piano. Don't get it... lol

Because one of the many PW forum myths is "OMG Roland sound is TEH SUX!!!" ...

(In fact, it's right up there with "OMG, the Casio pivot!!!")

All pianos sound different - that’s why people spend so much time shopping for acoustic pianos...

...it doesn’t finish there - the room, the furnishings etc can affect the sound in situ... then a piano tech can make some adjustments once it’s settled down.

There are far too many variables to say that one sound is better than the other, or more realistic than the other, so I guess people end up buying what they like best.

I’ve heard that Yamaha digitals are preferred by those who like a brighter sound (not sure how true that is), so perhaps that’s what the OP prefers?

Learning to play. Consciously incompetent, which apparently is a good starting point. smirk

I’ve seen some video reviews of the RD-88 and I’m very surprised at the sound coming out of it - something not quite right about the sound in the recordings.

I’d be keen to know if anyone buys one, and manages to get the ‘concert grand‘ piano to sound more like the other SuperNatural recordings/demos that I’ve watched...

Which for instance?
Mind there are "SuperNatural" and "SuperNatural modelling" versions, and the most recent "PureAcoustic"... and that some don't care much for any of them?
What are you listening with?
Also the rather heavy compression for online streaming may matter.
You can't expect much from its built-in speakers, but in online reviews mostly line-out is used, so I guess this wouldn't be the cause.

I tried the p515, I could actually hear the difference between CFX and bosendorfer and each has its own characteristic. I havent tried the es8, but when I listen to it on youtube, I can't hear any difference between EX (although it should be brigher) and SK, Sk-5 sound a bit different though, but it seems they have not much characteristic.

The best way to make a Roland sound like a Yamaha is to sell the Roland and buy a Yamaha. blush
