We have released an article about how to write a melody.

It is a rather hot topic lately and Gisela and I (WKMT London directors) thought we could collaborate by releasing an article which talks about the 6 main elements to consider when writing a melody.

Gisela is an established composer with years of experience teaching and writing music.

I believe this material will be enlightening for any student wanting to start by composing a truly satisfying melodic line. This melodic line could then be used as the main theme of a piano sonata or symphony for example smile

Here it goes

I gave your article a cursory look and I believe this could be helpful information for aspiring composers. Based on what I've heard around here lately there's a desperate need for more inspired melody writing. So I thank you for taking the time to write and post this valuable information. When I've critiqued work here my typical comment is that the melodic material isn't strong enough. Those who have studied music history may remember that Beethoven kept numerous sketch books in which he honed his melodies.

I hope everyone who visits this forum and has an interest in composing will take a look at your work as I did. It's so easy to believe that anyone can make a melody up in their head and then believe that it's wonderful. I've often said composers should make their melodies win their hearts by not accepting the first thought that crosses their mind. Try variations, try something different. Here's a thought when you sit down to write a piece of music don't just write one melody and work with it, write three, then decide which is best and use only it.

Thanks for posting!!

Excellent article. I'm hoping to devote some time to your article. It reminded me of an introduction to species counterpoint. Which BTW I'm hoping to revisit after trying it many years ago.
