Just finished watching the last episode of season 2 of The Expanse.

What do I hear playing in a scene towards the end of the episode but Of Foreign Lands and Peoples. The same piece was also a recurring theme in the 1970s Australian Film My Brilliant Career, which I hadn’t realised until after I learnt the piece.

What have you played and then later recognised in a show of any kind?

Funny you should ask, this come up while my girlfriend and I were watching 50 Shades of Grey on Valentine's Day. Bach - BWV 974 - Adagio and Chopin, Prelude in E Minor, both of which I have learned.

There's a fair amount of classical piano music in the 50 Shades of Grey movies.

Fifty Shades Of Grey: Classical Selections Arranged For Piano

That's a book that I don't have myself, though, so I can't say if it's any good.

There's some great music in Westworld! The only one I remember offhand is a Rachmaninoff piece that was performed at a party.

It was this movie that spurred me to learn the Goldberg:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HtReeRxzRc

The delectable Juliette Binoche playing the first variation on a honky-tonk grand in a war zone.
"My mother always told me I'd summon my husband by playing the piano." smirk

It's also no accident that the only Bach I only ever managed to memorise are the Goldberg Aria and variation 1........

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

I had learned and relearned the Bach Prelude in C a couple of times, and I had listened to so many versions I thought I couldn't be surprised by it. But as the end credits started for The Iron Lady, (a movie about the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher), I just about fell off the couch when Daniel Barenboin played his interpretation. Just so exquisite to my ears.

My girlfriend said the book was slow, and could never finish it. The movie wasn't that good either, in my opinion. But it had some nice music!

Actually, "the book" that I was referring to there is the one with the sheet music in it, as linked.

I've never tried reading those novels, not my thing. I have watched all of the movies though, it's sort of an occupational hazard when you own a movie theatre and do technical check screenings before showing the movie to the public. smile (If something is going to quit I would rather that it quits when there's nobody in the auditorium other than me and not when there's someone sitting in every seat.)

The movies are pretty much meh, as far as I'm concerned. I've seen a lot of romances that I've liked a lot more than that. The first one sure got a lot of people out to see it though -- everyone just had to come and see what it is that they did. The next two didn't do nearly as well since the basic curiosity seekers had already seen what they wanted to in the first one.

The last movie I watched with a piano soundtrack was "Call Me By Your Name" with Timothée Chalamet as the lead actor. He played at least 1 piece by Scarlatti.

There was the Classic cartoon movie "A Charlie Brown Christmas" with a few Jazzy tunes by Vince Guraldi including "Skating", "Christmas Time is Here" that you can get piano versions of the score. And somewhere in the movie Shroeder played the Beethoven "Für Elise" & "Linus & Lucy". There is 1 scene Snoopy walked by some coo coo clocks and the tune "Minuet in G" Anh 116 from the Notebook for Anna M Bach came up.

"Sunset Boulevard" with Gloria Swanson was a 1950 American classic. Somewhere in the movie Max von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim) played the Bach "Toccata & Fugue" in Dm on the organ. This was original an organ piece but there are piano arrangements.

Getting into Pop music the Australian film "Muriel's Wedding" from 1994 featuring the music of ABBA. The 4 memorable piece: "Waterloo", "Mama Mia!", "Dancing Queen" & "Fernando". There are piano version of these. And a more recent movie: "Mama Mia!" with Pierce Brosnan & Meryl Streep with more pieces: "I Have a Dream", "Does Your Mother Know", 'Dancing Queen", "Mama Mia!", "Take a Chance on Me", "The Winner Takes It All", "Chiquitita", "Voulez-vous". Piano versions available.

The "Graduate" from 1967 with Dustin Hoffman featuring the theme song "Scarborough Fair" sung by Simon & Garfunkel. The original was with a guitar but piano versions are available.

Much as I am enjoying this variation on a theme. ha

And this is the internets so I can't really expect anything but a random walk from the original topic.

However I was thinking about that experience of watching something and the sudden realisation of clearly recognising a piece of music you know really well from having learnt it. To me it provides an extra small connection to what I am watching.

Ah, sorry about that. My fault, I did this all the time. I often scan (as opposed to reading), and miss important details. smile

I just watched the movie few weeks ago, and learned the pieces before that. So I did have a sudden realization of recognizing the piece. However, it didn't connect me with the movie. In fact, it made me want to stop watching the movie and play piano instead.

I play in a jazz big band and we did some charts with themes from TV shows from the 60s, 70s and 80s. When I saw the names of the shows, I thought that I had no idea how the theme songs went, but as soon as we played them, they were instantly familiar. Two examples:

Mannix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLTb3_-pdU4

I Dream of Jeannie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szECpTGoXFk

Wow. That 'Mannix' theme is a blast from the past.

I'm not good enough yet to play any TV themes but one day I'd like to be able to play the themes from 'Cheers' and 'Taxi'.

For TV theme songs, I have (and highly recommend) Big Book of TV Theme Songs. It has Where Everyone Knows Your Name (Cheers) and Mannix and Get Smart and I Dream of Jeannie and Rockford Files and Bewitched and... well, you get the idea.

Note that there is a Second Edition of this book as well. I don't have that one. It's not quite as interesting to me because, unlike the first edition, it has themes for a lot of shows that I've never actually seen. Newer stuff, I guess.

Chopin and Tchaikovsky are everywhere smile

I don't remember what show or moveiw we were watching just couple of munths ago, but there was a scene in a bar (or restaurant) and the music was playing on the background - and I started to nudge my husband - I know it, I know it, I'm learning it now. I don't remember anything about the movie/show, but I remember that moment!

Here the music: Chopin, Cantabile for piano in B flat major, B. 84

As we've now deviated completely from piano music, I'm reminded that many of the nature and science documentaries I've been watching on TV recently (mostly on BBC 4) have classical music by Grieg as 'mood' music.

When there is a sunrise (or even sunset smirk ) over sand dunes or sheet ice or mountains, the inevitable background music would be this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCEzh3MwILY

And when there is a stalker (of the non-homo sapiens species), followed by the chase and finally, the bite to the jugular, the music would be:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLp_Hh6DKWc

I hope that the TV audience try to find out what the music is, if they don't recognise it. But they probably do, as people who watch these programmes (as opposed to soap operas or X Factor or American Idol) tend to be intelligent and inquisitive thumb.

P.S. Grieg himself has transcribed the Peer Gynt Suites Nos.1 & 2 for solo piano, if anyone wants to learn them.

How wonderful! Listening to your last link now - nice for working... I can picture myself in the garden with the hoe going at it smile

But I will bring you back to piano music. This is not often played wonderful piece used in documentary Home: Skulte, Arieta (I have a score if anyone is interested).

Look what I found, I didn't check if it exists for other composers, but what a fascinating reference: Chopin on IMDB

Now, looking through that list, I remember that I was telling my husband about more pieces because I cannot help myself and jump up and down when I hear something that I know.
