Advertising.

It is inlaid on the CFX, and it may just be stickers on the other models. I remember the stickers back when we were using the CFIII, but the CFIIIs had the inlay.

Many piano manufacturers put their logo on the side of the piano of their largest (9 foot and 7-1/2 foot) models. Most of the smaller models of many manufacturers do not feature the side logo even when their larger ones do. The reason for that may be for advertising in large(r) concert halls.

I’ve never seen the side decals used on the Yamaha grands other than the full concert models like the CFIII or the CFX. I’ve heard or maybe read that Americans (perhaps some other markets) don’t like the side decals on their home pianos so most companies now only do that for their largest Performance grands. My friend who owns a big Petrof ( don’t remember how big) has a decal on the side of her piano and I like how it looks. I like the side decals. I would like a side inlay even more that way it would be more durable. But I’m strange. I don’t have room for a CFX so I guess I’ll have to live without the side logo. smile

This thread got me curious so I googled and found these:

Petrof 1 (I don't really like this logo):

Petrof 2 (I like this logo better):

I like how these look on stage, and on these full length concert instruments, and I've always liked the round Yamaha logo. But I don't think I'd want one on my 5'8" piano!

I've seen side logos on smaller Yamaha's in the past, but not too often. My Steinway B from the 1980's has the side logo inlaid on the treble side, but it started life as a C&A services piano. I happen to like it a lot. The side logo is most commonly placed on pianos intended to be concert and rental instruments. The local Yamaha dealer here has side decals along with their dealership decal on many of their pianos. They do a large rental business.

I've occasionally seen the Side logo on both the bass and treble sides just in case the bass side is turned toward the audience.

We do a number of rentals for concert events and we can get Yamaha, Bösendorfer, and even Avantgrand logos. They adhere to the side of the piano, they are removable, and they leave no trace of being there after removal. By the way Shirokuro, the Petrof with the big fat letters is a removable logo. I have installed them (and removed them) before.

My 2 cents,

Oh wow, I would have never guessed they were removable! How interesting!

When I lived in Japan, I used to play a grand at a public community center. Someone had donated it to the center, and it had a big kanji on the bass side that stands for "exempt" (part of the two-kanji word for tax exempt). I always thought that looked so funny, because you know it's not a brand name/logo. I'll see if I can find a photo...

Found one!

According to where this photo was linked, it said the reason these 免 marks are found on grands in Japan is because, apparently, if you were a music student or the piano was to used in a public school, you could get a piano without having to pay tax on it, and it would have this mark on the side. That's esp interesting to me because I used to teach in elementary school in Japan, and none of the pianos at the schools where I taught had these marks on them. I wonder if the law changed at some point...

Rich, have you ever heard of that?

When I bought my Estonia 168 around 2000, that model had the side logo, which I like. When I traded it in at the end of 2004 for the Estonia 190, the new and larger piano no longer had the side logo. The dealer mentioned that the North American market is not particularly in favour of side logos. I don't know if Estonias destined for the European market have the side logo, but aren't most Estonias currently shipped to North America?

I wonder if we could just get or buy an Estonia logo? Rich, as an Estonia dealer, is that possible?
