Hello I'm a intermediate player that is about to get a new digital Piano. Sadly I can't consider an accoustic piano at the moment because I live in a small apartment in Vienna.
So far I used the Korg D1 and I have been very happy with it's action considering it's pricepoint but I feel like it is time to upgrade because whenever I go practice at an accoustic piano (grands but especially uprights(mostly Feurichs)), I struggle especially to articulate fast staccato and "non legato" runs and to perform fast trills as well as I can on my digital.

I already tried both of my candidates as well as Rolands and Casios top models but I didn't have a lot of time to test everything thoroughly.
In found that the NU1X was the best at addressing the technical issues that I feel on accoustic pianos, followed by the kawai ca 78. But I strongly disliked the squishy keybed of the 78, which would hopefully not be an issue with the 79.
The other models that I tried honestly didn't feel like an upgrade to the D1. Sadly I can't consider Kawais and Yamahs more expensive models because they are out of my budget.

From what I wrote so far my choice seems obvious but my worry with the NU1X is that it might limit me in the long or even short term by being an upright action. I do love playing classical period pieces with fast 32th trills and I also play a Scarlatti Sonata with fast repeated notes. So far my trills aren't fast enough to be limited by the upright action but I worry that this might become an issue eventually that forces me to upgrade once again.
So the ca 79 which is supposed to emulate a grand action might be a better long term purchase?

Also I'm wondering whether upright actions might be better to improve technique? They do seem harder to play with proper articulation so I'm wondering whether practicing on an upright might make playing on a grand feel "easier" in return?

Maybe someone here on the forum has some input to help me with my decision.

NU1X.
Real action will be always better if you need to perform or take lessons on an acoustic.
I have the same problem. Things are easier with my ES8. Too easier.

My pianos : Kawai ES8, Yamaha N1X
Headphone : Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 Ω

Upright pianos are definitively worse for technique. The CA79 should have fixed the felt pad issues with the older Grand Feel actions, and it has proper key pivot points. I am not a fan of the Kawai wooden key actions but they are good for practicing.

If you are mostly playing upright pianos then a digital piano with an upright action sounds like a fine idea to me. I would think that most repertoire is playable just fine on an upright - at least that is the impression I have gotten from other sub forums on here.

Between these: Nu1x for sure.

That upright action is great, and... real.

I am not sure any concrete advice would be useful, given how personal such a preference in part is. However:

If I were you'd I'd wait the few weeks till the CA79 can be tested in person, but based on the above it seems you really enjoyed the NU1X and really did not enjoy the CA78. I am not so sure if the GF-III action will be so different that it would radically change your preference.

Hello Charades, welcome to the forum.

Yes, I would strongly recommend waiting a week or two in order to play-test the CA79.

Also, would you consider a second-hand Avantgrand N1?
May I ask, what is your maximum budget?

Kind regards,
James

Charades welcome.

My question to you is how long do you think you will be in that apartment in Vienna?
If you are staying in the area when you move maybe the NU1X will be the right choice. But if you're going to me moving farther away the NU1X might be expensive to move. Just something to think about. I also agree that you should wait the few weeks and try out the CA79.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

Thank you a lot for all the replies.
You are right by recommending me to still wait and try out the CA 79 as well. I will do that for sure.

Honestly I didnt consider a used N1 so far because I would be worried to be left alone with durability issues.
Is that something I should consider anyway?
My budget is up to about 4500€

I do still plan to stay here for the next years to come. It's hard to say how long for sure but I think It wouldn't be worth it at the moment to consider moving far away in this purchase.

I'm still wondering about some personal experiences of people who practiced on uprights most of their time and then switched to a grand eventually. How did it feel? Was it easy to adapt? Do you think practicing on the upright did any good in the long run compared to practicing on a grand? Maybe the opposite?

I think you will do fine for Years on a NU1X. The main question is, if a noisy action can become a problem for neighbours or a girlfriend/wife whatever.

Surely test them yourself. At this point you can safely ignore forum wisdom, maybe ask your teacher or colleagues for opinions.
You might also consider checking a used "silent" acoustic U1?

NU1X is a great instrument. You tested it with specific technical demands, it passed and you liked it. Many professional classical pianists have uprights at home and they manage to play their repertoire, so an upright action isn’t all that limiting. I’d say go for the NU1X.

CyberGene, what was the reason for you to repalce your NU1X with the N1X?
Just the action?

Cheers!

Two keys consistently producing higher velocities than the rest and that couldn’t be fixed by calibration. That and the loud note issue, which wasn’t fixed at the time. Otherwise I’m OK with upright action. Although I still prefer grand piano actions.

CyberGene, isn't that issue with two keys producing higher velocities something that would be covered by Yamahas 5 year warranty period or did you not get that with your purchase?

Note: two escapement ports on the back (top) of the NU1/X; what purpose do these serve?

I believe the tweeters are facing forward (front top), so I wonder if the escapements are there to capture the remnants of what once was a high frequency, an echo, a faint murmur, an abstract, or perhaps even the silhouette of a colour that never defined itself, yet somehow managed to exist within a realm that escapes our perceptions.

I had 30-days money back from Thomann on top of the 5-year warranty which is why I decided to directly return the NU1X and replace it with a N1X. The combination of the two issues (high velocities and loud note issue) spoiled the magic a little and I preferred playing safe with the N1X which is certainly a better instrument and I expected that it wouldn't suffer from any of these issues because it uses sensors on the hammers and under the keys. And ultimately I have zero problems with the N1X, so I'm happy.
