Hi Folks, has anyone got an idea of the mentioned Kawai piano? I tried to search for review but nothing comes up. Also what is the typical price range for this Kawai if you know. I would greatly appreciate ideas on the quality, the sound... Planning to upgrade my acoustic piano and I see this used one on the market. Thanks

Love4Music - you’d get a more informed response from the Digital Piano Forum. The members here concentrate on acoustic pianos. Welcome to PianoWorld. We’re glad you’re here. Best Wishes. Oh and on the Digital Piano Forum there’s a “prices paid” thread that lists prices paid for digital pianos that could be quite informative.

Hmmmm. I checked the Kawai USA site and found nothing. You might get more information on the Kawai Australia site by looking up the serial number. I’m not a paying member so I don’t have access to the piano serial number index to see the age of pianos. It looks like a really nice upright, but looks don’t tell the story at all. If someone here doesn’t have the info, you might try the Piano Tuners and Technician Forum. Those folks seem to have the broadest knowledge base because they literally see and work on nearly every brand and model. I wish I could be more help. The acoustic piano market seems to be really different in Australia than here in the US. The models can have different designations which makes things confusing.

I forgot to add that its imported from Japan. I checked and its built in first half of 1985. So its 35 yo. Is it good and how about $3000? I will eventually come to inspect anyway, just some ideas in advance are valuable.

From what little I know about Japanese pianos is generally they are seasoned differently for distribution for the Japanese climate. Drying and cracking of many of the wood parts would be a worry for export to dramatically different environments. Since Australia is a continent, I imagine your climate ranges from jungle to desert. If there was any damage done with the export, it should be evident by 35 years. You can post the question on the Tuner Tech Forum. They are the acoustic piano experts. This seems strange. The person who answered you is a Yamaha and Estonia fan. But Kawai makes beautiful pianos.

Thank you again. I thought about climate and damage this might have caused as you ssid. Australia imported a lot of pianos from Japan so they should have taken this into account. But yes I will post in that forum as you suggested. I will pay attention to this issue if i come to inspect. Cheers

I look forward to the answers and would enjoy hearing, along with other Forum members, what you find out and further updates on your piano adventure. When people post about piano shopping for me it’s almost like working in a piano store. And thank heavens I’m not working on commission. OMG. It’s literally the pits.

This is not a Kawai model I have ever heard of. It is likely a special model made for a particular dealer or importer.

You can call Kawai Australia to see if it was one of their models in the 80s. But it was not sold in North America, so I have no information at all.

Thanks for your reply. I happened to see another 40 yo one in a store and tested it. It sounds nice with strong bass. The seller priced it at AUD6500 and told me brandnew one would cost 20K. He showed me that it has dark timber for hammers and silver pín, so its the top class, not sure whether he was telling the truth or just to convince me smile.

A sales person is always trying to convince you.
A 40 year old piano I would only buy, with an unlimited 5-year guarantee by the seller in writing. (cost free repair, adjustment, transport and exchange.)

The only thing, which can really give peace of mind, is to book an *independent* qualified piano technician to join you on your journey through the store rooms.
It is worth the investment.
