Hello,

I'm planning soon to replace all a RX3 hammers set for a Ronsen Weickert one. I'd go for a 14lb. But I read here and there that the Ronsen hammers are lighter than the normal and I'm afraid about the impact on the mechanic (the touch and playability). Perhaps I should go with the 16lb (recommanded for 6' and more) ? Any advice or comment by piano tech that successfully replaced a full set of kawai rx hammers with those Ronsen Weickert (or other Ronsen felt if suits better) would be very appreciated. I read this article ( https://my.ptg.org/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?GroupId=43&MID=627432) but still want opinions smile Thanks.

Greeting,s
I use the Weickert hammers from Ronsen for everything I am doing, these days. Whether the density or total weight is your concern is not clear, as there are 16lb hammers that weigh the same as 14lb hammers, they just have denser felt. You can order the hammers of the same weight as the ones on the piano, as there is no "one" weight of the custom hammers Ronsen sells. I order the approximate hammer weight that I want for my strike weight, in grams. Since the shank generally offsets the weight I remove when I taper and shape the sides and tails, my SW is close to where I want it.
Regards,

Thanks Ed Foote ! The density isn't an issue for me, just the weight. I'd wish to get approx. the same Rx3 stock key weight without to file the ronsen hammers if possible. I don't know the original rx3 hammer weight; sure thing, the actual weight of thoses has much decreased due to excessive sanding and it goes with many consequences regarding the sound and the touch.

When one installs new hammers, you need to be able to fit the hammer to produce best tone and touch. Shaping is always required. They must be made oversize, to be able to be produced.

The single most difficult skill for piano technicians to acquire is the art and science of tone regulation. Properly done, tone regulation is the process where the tone and the touch are developed simultaneously.

There is a "feedback" loop available. It involves feeling the inertia of the hammer as the key moves it. If you start with a hammer that is made for the shape down/juice up protocol; (Ronsens are almost always that way), you can use the feel of how much force the hammer is carrying when moved at the minimum key speed required for making music. If you have to move the key so slowly to get a soft sound that no time is left to get to the next note, the touch is bad.

A rebuilder told me last year for Kawai and Yamaha pianos it is best to use hammers from Kawai and Yamaha. He said the hammers designed for American grands do not work well on Asian pianos.

Is there truth to this?

Can weickert hammers work on any brand of piano?

Very interesting... It might be great to hear some reviews here (pros/cons). Kawai hammers are Hot pressed and Ronsen Cold pressed. I guess the best is to order some samples to test them.

I precise that I chose the Weickert Felt regarding the specs of this hammer that could perfectly match a RX kawai. For all the Ronsen in general I don't know.
