Does anyone know how to install a firmware update on a Yamaha NU1? Support emailed me a program file but didn't explain how to install it. The Firmware Update instructions (involivng a USB) on Yamaha's website are for pianos with a display which this model doesn't have. I know some other people on this forum have done it before so would love advice!

Check the Update Manual for the NU1X. It should be the same.

The NU1X has a specific updater that runs on windows though. This is a PRG file.

Here you go:

1) Save the attached NU1SETUP.PRG file in a FAT32 formatted USB flash memory stick.
2) Check the firmware versions currently installed:
- Power Down
- Hold down the METRONOME+RECORD+PLAY/STOP buttons
- Power Up
- Release the buttons
- Use +/- buttons to select test t01
- Press PLAY/STOP
- Press REVERB and note down the firmware versions you have installed
3) Install the new firmware:
- Power Down
- Plug the USB stick in the [USB TO DEVICE] port
- Hold down the PLAY/STOP button
- Power Up
- Release the PLAY/STOP button
- Once Ins shows up in the display, press PLAY/STOP
- Once n_Y shows up in the display, press PLAY/STOP
- Wait for about 2-3 minutes. DO NOT POWER DOWN during the firmware update
- Remove the USB stick
4) Check the version again and confirm it got updated.

I also have the pdf excerpt from the service manual. PM me and I can email it to you

For a second there I thought Yamaha had finally released the NU1 firmware update to the public, instead of having to contact their support.
The provided link only has the NU1X firmware, not the NU1’s.

You are right. It's weird, there is no fw for NU1 at yamaha site.

Every firmware update has a chance of bricking a computer. If people don't have complaints about their piano there is no need to update.

Yes it's a version of the NU1X update, made for the NU1. It's supposed to fix the loud note issue but I still encounter it on the NU1 after update.

The Yamaha tech told me it may not fix it completely and if so, an action regulation is required.

Hi Gombessa or others,

Can I confirm there is no problem flashing the NU1X firmware into NU1?

Thanks a lot.

I would strongly advise *against* flashing the firmware of one model onto another, unless you receive specific information from the manufacturer that it is safe to do so.

Kind regards,
James

Thanks James
I doubt that too, but Yamaha America and Europe won't tell me, they refer me to local Yamaha who don't know the answer.
But Gombessa above sounds ok to do so.
After I made the post, I thought no one will see a 2 years old post, so I started a new one. I'm sorry for that.

No, not quite. Gombessa wrote:

(emphasis mine)

So, in other words, Yamaha prepared a version of the NU1 update that implements the same fixes as the NU1X update.

If it was possible to apply the NU1X firmware update to the original NU1, I doubt Yamaha would have gone to the trouble of developing a separate update for the NU1. Therefore, I strongly doubt that they are cross-compatible.

Note, in the case of Kawai, software updates for the NV5S cannot be loaded onto the NV5.

Kind regards,
James

Kawai James is correct smile

If you have an NU1, email Yamaha support and they will send you the NU1 firmware update, which is DIFFERENT from the NU1X firmware that you can readily find and download from their website.

Thanks for the information, but this is what Yamaha Europe (and I think it's UK) that answer me:

Thank you for your enquiry.
For your reference, your case number is 00100284.

Updates for Yamaha instruments are product specific. This means that the NU1X firmware will not run in the NU1 as these are 2 completely different instruments and will not update an NU1 to an NU1X.

We do have a Firmware update available for the NU1 which can improve the playability of the instrument.

This update should be performed by an authorised Yamaha service technician who can also check the regulation and re-calibrate your piano during the update.

If you would like further information information on this update, please feel free to contact your nearest Yamaha hybrid service centre at the location below who will be able to give you more details and the costs involved to perform this.

https://uk.yamaha.com/en/support/service_locator/index.html

We hope this helps

Thank you and best regards,
Steve
