I recently have been shopping and trying to negotiate a price on a new kawai k500. I was quoted 10890 as a price. I offered back 9400 which was at like 33% off smp. He called back and did not even want to offer a new price. He did say he’d take off delivery and the move of our old piano to the basement which was 300 dollars. I agree it was sort of a low ball offer but not unreasonable. I am in Michigan and only two dealers in the state each like 2 hrs away. I am thinking about going back to offer 10400 and the free delivery/move. Is that unreasonable. That is 11k out the door. I think that is quite a reasonable offer. I’d like some advice before sending it back.
The normal price he claims is 11800 but they put in a order at the recent trade show or something. What bothered me is he keeps talking about discount off msrp too.
Thanks!!

So, just to clarify, sales tax on $10,400 would be $600?

Also - given the distance involved, I'm assuming the dealer would not cover the cost of an initial tuning?

PIERRE'S FINE PIANOS has a good reputation and I believe they ship out of state. You are being charged too much for the K500.

You might also check with Chupps Pianos in New Paris, IN (near South Bend).

However, the problem with ordering a piano from out of state is that you wouldn't necessarily get an opportunity to audition it prior to purchase.

Yeah. I have to imagine delivery is even worse. Almost 3 hours. The salesman claims that the transport charge to Michigan is also high and people nearer the wear coast is where the lower deals can be made.

I mean 10800 is within a 20ish% discount off smp. Fine claims most deals occurs in the 14-25 range. So maybe I am being too greedy?

Ignore the Fine and greedy stuff. You are paying too much for the K500. Consider looking at the high-end Ritmuller pianos and see how much piano you can get for way less. Or order from Pierre.

I think the issue is the transport costs from the west coast and the lack of competition. He claims that my price of like 9400 was a fair price like 2 years ago

I am curious how Navindra seems to always been so set in their convictions about the world. Is this person a kawai dealer? Several dealers have told me kawai gives them a price increase or so each year. If pianos appreciate in price about 5-8% each year and the cost to ship to the East is much more than where they arrive in Cali it seems like this is a reasonable price. I am just asking for some
Confirmation. Broad statements like you’re being charged too much is not helpful. More helpful would be something like a normal average cost is closer to xx thousand dollars.

The discounts off SMP that have been shared on the forum for Kawais purchased over the past few years seem to range from 35-45%. I got 37% but that was 2 years ago. More recently, there was someone who purchased a GX3 in the past month or so who got 45% as I recall. So I'd say your price does seem high, but I live within 45 minutes of a half dozen large piano stores and you live 2 hours from the closest store, so things are different here. You might call the place where I bought my piano, they are a Kawai dealer and do a lot of online business, so they would ship anywhere: Cordogan's

There is probably more room to make up margin on higher priced grands. So I think I could justify those discounts from smp. But I don't know if you can broadly say all pianos at all levels should see the same discount?

Mark L makes a good suggsetion. Chicago isn't that far from Micihigan.

At 20% off SMP the $10,890 is not unreasonable. As Fine and others point out, there are many factors at play which determine dealer pricing.

Another option is to find a used Kawai in top notch condition.. I don't know where you are in Michigan, but there is a 10 year old Kawai K5 for sale in Traverse City (Craigslist) for only $3,000 (they paid $8,000 new). The K5 is shorter than the K500 by two inches, and lacks some other features - BUT it still has the Millenium III action. If the piano has been lightly played and reasonably well maintained it could be a fine instrument. Here's the old K series brochure.

https://kawaius.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Kawai-K2-K3-K5-K6-K8-Brochure.pdf

Guess my point is, the "deal" won't go away immediately, so you have time to look at other options.

It all depends on your location and surrounding market. If you’re willing to drive to other Kawai dealers to getter a better price, then make some calls to other Kawai dealers. All dealers show the discount from MSRP. If the dealer is out of state, you can save by paying no sales tax but in all likelihood pay much more for shipping. I got about 30% from SMP on my Yamaha and my Estonia but those were special mark downs. Every other piano was listed as special sale was only 20% from SMP.

If it were me, but it’s not, I’d check other Kawai dealers and try some other K500s. To me 20% off SMP isn’t unreasonable. Best Wishes.
