This is a fascinating 1974 NY Times review of Alicia de Larrocha's recording of Iberia.

The reviewer's suggestion that it isn't an "imperishable masterpiece" might seem strange today, but I think Señora de Larrocha's performances played a huge part in cementing the reputation of both Albeniz and Granados for the following generation.

Her 1974 recording of "Iberia" has always been my favorite, and I think it remains unmatched. Her Mozart concertos are also incredible.

I agree with the OP's evaluation of Iberia and think it's probably the greatest piano music by a Spanish composer. I do agree with the reviewer that at least some of the pieces in the suite are a bit too long.

I never really appreciated this piece until I heard selections from the suite played by the terrific pianist Jose Ramos-Santana at the Mannes Keyboard Festival over a period of several years.

Her first version, for Columbia in 1959, disappeared into monophonic oblivion some time ago; the second, on Epic eight years later, vanished along with that label's classical line; the third, a new London recording, has just appeared and may it always be with us (CSA 2235, two disks).

Mr. Davis claims that the Epic recording vanished, but at least one copy can be found in my cabinet. It's one of my most cherished recordings.
