Anybody know if the lettering on my 1924 Steinway upright fallboard would be a decal or a brass inlay? It has been varnished over at some stage and I want to know if it is worth trying to get to the brass underneath or if it was a decal used back then.

Even if varnished over, the lettering remains sticking out, while an inlay would be completely level with the fallboard surface?

I don't know the specific answer but I have done inlay work and finish correction. Can you post a picture and explain what you are trying to do? Is there a problem with the varnish? Are you trying to make this area look better or refinishing the whole piano?

If it was made in Hamburg, it is probably brass. If it was made in New York, it is probably a decal.
