Hi everyone,

There is a used Yamaha C3D, 6'0", Grand Piano for sale at a local music shop. It's supposed to be from 1982, the serial number is D3420154, and it's been inspected by a piano technician and determined to be "95%" condition compared to new. The story was supposed to be that the piano was purchased by a family mostly for decoration and almost never played.

The asking price is 19,000$ (Canadian Dollars).

Any thoughts about the value?

Thank you!

Hi Grantweep, Welcome to PianoWorld. I’m sorry your question slipped by without response. A couple questions. Who hired the piano technician that gave the piano the 95%. If you paid the techs fee, that’s a great start. If it was a tech that works for the dealer, I would be skeptical and get my own tech to examine the piano. The price quoted to me seems a bit high for a 38 year old piano. I do like C3s.

So that's about £11,300... It's not a stellar deal to be honest. For a C3 of that age I'd be looking to spend no more than £7000 which is $12,100CAD, but then I also don't know what the used market is like where you are, and local markets do have differences in price.

Thanks for the warm welcome! It was indeed the dealer that inspected the piano. This piano seemed cheaper/better value compared to some of the other used pianos in the area. There was another dealership who was selling a Kawai grand piano in a lot worse condition, and didn't sound as good for 17,000$.

Thanks for your feedback- I've been looking around and the grand pianos seemed to be priced very high at dealers. Any suggestions for private sales? I live in Vancouver, Canada.

We have on this forum several members from Vancouver so hopefully they can chime in about reputable dealers, great piano technicians and better advice on pricing. I myself am only minutes away from my Yamaha dealer. It seems prices are a bit high here in the Southwest but we’re not close to major shipping ports so that probably affects price.

Now I’ll riddle you with questions. wink Did you try other pianos at those dealerships? What is your budget approximately? Are you looking for a grand only or would an upright be an option? If you’re looking for a grand, how big?

Piano shopping is fun and exciting and you get a piano at the end!!!!! Everyone here on the forum loves advising new buyers because there’s so many choices and options there’s bound to be a piano.thats just right for you.

Yes, it's very exciting! I've been looking at getting a grand piano for many years now, and I've only been able to recently look at this idea realistically. At the moment, the budget is 25,000$ CND. I've tried some other pianos and I think I like the sound of larger pianos - around 6ft, maybe more (as long as it will realistically sound good in my house...no point getting a large piano if it's too big).

Most of the piano dealers always talk to me when I'm playing and it's hard to get a good 15 minutes alone with the piano. I'm currently playing on a 350$ Casio weighted electric piano, lol!
