I am looking for brand new upright for my son (he is just starting out) and went to local stores and these are the 2 that i have shortlisted based on sales person's recommendation. Both come with 10 year warranty. I have 0 knowledge about Pianos and my son is too new to identify the difference. Any thoughts

Kawaii K-200: This one would be $6077 delivered from an authorized Kawaii dealer.

Geyer GU-123: This one would be $5500 delivered. The other much bigger store in my city recommended this in my price range of 5-6k. He said he would never recommend the 200 series in Kawaii and the Geyer hammers are really expensive compared to Kawaii.

Also have option of buying at 20 year old Kawaii UST7 for $3600 delivered. I was leaning towards new one as they come with warranty and dont know what u will get with used.

Typically lightly used pianos are the best bang for your buck. The catch is, it needs to be inspected by an independent piano technician so you know what you are buying and what repair needs to be done and when it should be done. Some dealers offer a 2 year to 5 year warranty on used pianos but dealers have to make a profit so buying used from a dealer is more expensive than a private sale. Private sale pianos are typically the best priced, but delivery, first tunings and “touch ups” are on the buyer’s dime. Dealers and their sales folk typically are more knowledgeable than many private owners but do tend to downplay any disadvantages on their pianos in the showroom.

I bought new from my dealer because they had a great trade in trade up policy. Doing the trade in route is more expensive than selling my piano first and buying a piano in cash, but I love the convenience of having my previous piano wheeled out and my new piano wheeled in. Buying new is significantly easier but you pay extra for that convenient and brand new pianos always depreciate.

I’d buy or view online Larry Fines Piano Buyer as a good resource for your piano shopping. Best wishes.

I would definitely go with Kawai rather than Geyer. The K200 sounds OK.The UST models are the institutional models and have the full new Millennium action that is so good in Kawai pianos.
In fact you could order a new UST model ,it is a few hundred $ less expensive than the K200.
The K200 does not have the Millennium action but is still a better choice I think than the Geyer.
Of course the downside of ordering the UST model (UST-1 or the UST--9 ???) model is that you
will be ordering a piano you have not tried.
If you decide on the used UST7 (also very good depending on condition ) you absolutely have
to pay a good technician to completely check the piano.
Do not buy without this being done.

Actually here is the link to Piano Buyer --Kawai
I am not altogether sure if in fact the K200 does not have the
Millennium action.Sorry about that .Anyway you can read all
about Kawai pianos here. The K300 is often the more desired
than the K200. However the K200 would be fine for quite a few
years.

The K200 should also have the Millenium III action. Here is a link to the dealer page (in German, but you‘ll see it):

There’s a $2,000 difference in the SMP pricing of these pianos, per the Piano Buyer. You’re being offered a modest discount on the Kawai, and almost no discount at all on the Geyer.

Here's the Pianobuyer info on Geyer, which also contains a link to the Geyer website.

Also - this might be of interest.

And yes, the Kawai K200 has the Millenium III action.
