Looking for a great used digital piano for $1300.00

I found a Kawai CN25 on Craigslist for $1100 asking price and when I played it, it sounded very tinny and certainly nothing even close to an acoustic. Just an hour prior to this, I played a new CN29 in a music store and loved the action and the sound. The owner of the used piano seemed honest and did not hear anything out of the ordinary. I am totally second guessing my ability to find a used digital piano now. What are major things that can be wrong with a 4-6 year old digital piano?

Hello Janiceb,

Welcome to the forum.

It's possible that the amplifier or speakers are failing, but this would probably be rather more noticeable than simply "tinny" sound.

I think it's more likely that the CN29 is a newer instrument, with higher quality sounds, amplification, and speakers.

On paper, the CN29 and previous generation CN27 appear to share many of the same specifications, however in reality the CN29 is a much better instrument, with a much richer, clearer sound.

Kind regards,
James

IMHO the first biggest difference is that the CN25 main piano sound is the EX ConcertGrand. Compared with the SK-EX of the CN27/29, the EX has a completely different sound timbre, less rich, more filtered in the lower velocities, and more bright and clean in the high velocities. IMHO the EX has a great dynamic range (that's very good for piano learning), but it feels more digital compared with the warm and sweet sound timbre of the SK-EX.

The second difference is that the the CN29 has a better amp+speaker system, so (at least from its internal speakers) it should sound better than the previous generations, even with the same piano patch.

Thank you Kawai James and Magicpiano. You described my situation very well. The EX was definitely less rich and absolutely more digital. Now, next question, exactly what do you mean when you say a great dynamic range is good for piano learning? Of course there will obviously be those that prefer a digital sound but after reading many reviews of digital pianos, it appears that the 2 main criteria are an acoustic action and an acoustic sound.

Janiceb,

Not sure what your location is.. but in used market like craigslist is your best bet.. I once got extremely lucky and found a mint condition Kawai CA-67 for $500 on Craigslist.. You do need patience for good deals though.. and don't settle for something that you are not happy with. Unfortunately, people are always getting rid of perfectly good digital pianos...so new ones will come up if you are in a metro or big enough city area.

Regards,
Osho
